Attendances

Apart from the result great day in thurles yesterday. All 4 teams well supported, good craic and banter. Car parks etc well stewarded. Not often we get to play in thurles but very impressed.

I heard the attendance for the Tullamore double header was 7000. This is absolutely shocking if true. The game was only on sky too so most people didn't have the option to stay at home and watch it. Doesn't say much for the fans of the four counties who would travel a couple of hours to see their teams in the knock out stages of the Championship. I'd reckon sky might wish they hadn't got these games seen as even the people from the counties involed weren't interested in them.

Terrible crowd in Tullamore but it was a long drive for 3 of the 4 counties ...Cork and Tipp have no great football support Sligo probably had most there from what I could see...
O Connor park is awkward aswell to get to.
Portlaoise much easier

Thurles was jammed yesterday people sitting on steps in the stand you wouldn't get another person in to it just a pity way games went especially for Wexford who probably had biggest support

galway were by far the best supported of the 4 teams in tullamore and yet this team is slowburner for marginal fans in the county. we get very little hurling support unless its an all ireland and outside of dublin are one of the biggest migrated locations in the country. I think croker will be lucky to get 35k on sunday with a breakdown along the lines of mayo 13k, galway 7 to 8k kerry and cork 4k each.

Sad to say kiloughter but I'd say you could divide your estimate for the Cork support by 2 or maybe even 4!

I'm one of the few regular Cork football supporters but I can't make it this time. For the first time in years I don't know if I would go if I could. The tactics in the Kerry game were crazy, the failure to alter them as we proceeded to get annihilated, mind boggling. I brought the family to the Kerry game and it felt like I had just burned money. I've never seen such a feeling of disillusionment in the county about the footballers. With zero faith in the management it is hard to justify the cost of the trip.

I think it has been magnified by the fact that there has been so much underage success and then under achieving at senior level while the hurlers have been doing the complete opposite since the arrival of JBM.

I'd expect 25 to 30k on Sunday. There was a tiny Kerry crowd at the Munster final but maybe the rising star of James O'Donoghue will bring a few more out this time.

Kerry won't travel to this one in any great numbers, the vibe around the place is that they're not too worried about Galway and many of them will probably 'wait til the semi'.

One thing that i feel the GAA are very poor at is making use of the various grounds around the country.
Limerick would be a far better venue for this Sundays double header with 3 of the 4 counties involved close by

shea you are right about that one. should defintely be in limerick. dahayeser I kind of feel your pain. I have thought a bit about this and the conclusion from a dual county perspective is that hurling sems to stoke the passions easier for marginal supporters within a dual county. although galway is more 50/50 between the codes than cork it nearly feels worse as our footballers traditionally are more succesful than our hurlers. I follow both and definitely marginal galway fans seem to be more up for hurling particularly if the hurlers are going well. galway football folk like a particular brand of football and are slow to follow unless they get it. the cork situtation is equally interesting. you always see a sea of red when your hurlers play but footballers on leeside defintely get the raw end of the deal. we did bring a good crwod to the connacht final but unlike 1998 whenour biggest crowd ever travelled to play mayo in castlebar this year we were travellling more in hope than expectation.

Seems to be an awful steep drop, for the sfc since this time last year if the forecasts are anything to go by. Quite worrying really. didn't realize it was such a problem

Well that's it hill16. Until today I was under the impression that attendances were holding up very well. All of a sudden I read a couple of articles using words like "dwindling" and "alarming decline".

I remember the 2011 quarter final line up. Kerry v Limerick and Mayo v Cork. Im not sure if the attendance reached 20 000. I suppose it depends on the counties involved really.

yep you generally need a team who hasnt been to croke park in a while or an ulster county as they generally get good support..and the dubs obviously..cork kerry and galway are bad news as regards attendances or a hurling county

Good point Hillman! They were like mice on the Hill at the final anyway. Don't even sing the national anthem.
