Attendances

Castlebar had more than the announced 26.500 on Sunday, that was obvious to anyone there, why are they giving smaller numbers ?

it holds 38 thousand castlebar
looked pretty packed with the main stand having few seats here and there
and the corners of the ground having space
looked about 32 thousand to me

I don't know if these figures are wrong, they were definitely fudged before but I dont know if that is still the case. I don't think the GAA like the bad PR of falling crowds.

There is a difference between looking packed and actually being full. A stand with every 3rd seat empty looks full on TV. Pairc Ui Caoimh looked packed on Sunday but it would regularly have had 14k more people there. There was 8,500 in each terrace on Sunday but their original capacity was 16k each. It's hard to imagine how you could almost double the crowd in each terrace but there was definitely space for another 3k in each I would say. One terrace in Castlebar looked slack enough and there was a lot of empty seats in the stand. You'd be surprised what that would add up to.

Ah could you not have PM'd me or something hill16no1man, my credibility is completely shot now. You are of course correct, it is seated behind the goals in McHale Park!

Though now lacking any credibility I still doubt that attendance was too far off and I am basing that on Pairc Ui Caoimh looking packed with 36k and being the exact same size stadium that housed 50k a few years back.

Jeff building a stadium for one match every 4 or 5 five years is daft espically when there are 3 other stadiums in the same province capable of holding the crowd. Croker and Aviva are national stadiums big difference. There was a lot of empty seats in the stand in castlebar and behind one of the goals and in the blue seats beside the tower.

It is one of the weirdest things about Gaa the always seem to give a smaller crowd then there actually is. there was a very poor Galway crowd in Castlebar last Sunday.

Galway football are not noted for a large supporter base but I thought on Sunday they brought a decent size crowd. Plenty of maroon where I was anyway.

I know that in Connacht the figures announced are only those who paid for tickets. So ya can include a good 1500-2000 extra for freebies. 2,200 at Sligo Limerick Game which didn't include u16's so more likely to be over 3,000

That seems to be an emerging pattern at games around the country these days. The lads on the Meath gate told me they only count the paying customers. It doesn't make sense because you'd think the GAA would be boasting the real higher attendances to make our games look in rude health.

Only reason I can think of is if there's a big match on that's not all ticket they can go over capacity by not counting the u16's.

55k expected at the final according to the hoganstand article.

From the top of my head:

Meath v Dublin quarter final 2005 60k
Meath v Dublin quarter final 2007 75k
Meath v Dublin quarter final 2007 replay 82k
Meath v Dublin quarter final 2009 82k
Meath v Dublin semi final 2010 65k
Meath v Dublin final 2012 70k
Meath v Dublin final 2013 54k
Meath v Dublin final 2014 50-60k (estimate)

Why couldn't these 3 Leinster finals have taken place a few years ago when they'd be guaranteed sell outs. Miss the days when the hype went into overdrive although with Dublin going for 9 out of 10 Leinsters we can be somewhat thankful this fixture still pulls over 50k.

Dublin would need to go 4 or 5 years without a Leinster to bring back the crowds but that's not going to happen ever.

Yeah, a Meath win on Sunday would reignite the rivalry. You'd definitely miss the old Dublin Meath battles

On another note there was 3,717 at the Waterford - Cork u21 hurling championship game last night.

Don't know how many were in Ennis for Clare - Tipp but it looked like a very big crowd 8 to 10,000 I'd say..

It's unreal how big some of the u21 turn outs are. The sad thing is a Meath win will re-ignite it momentarily but Dublin would prob win the next 5 meetings anyway. It's hard to get excited for Leinster when only 1 county can beat Dublin in 10 years. I miss the days when a Meath Ofally or Meath Laois game would be great craic. Now it's just matches v Dublin and Kildare that are in anyway good win or lose.
