Cork are celebrating a first Munster MFC success in four years following a thrilling 1-13 to 0-14 victory over Kerry after extra-time at Páirc Uí Rinn last night.
Keith Ricken's young guns recovered from a slow start to overcome their neighbours for the second time in the campaign. When the sides met in the group stage, Cork had 10 points to spare, but it was a lot closer on this occasion with Kerry missing a late two-point attempt to equalise.
Fionn O’Dowd, Lúc Mac Gearailt and a pair of Daragh Keane frees gave Marc Ó Sé’s side an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead before man of the match Kieran O'Shea finally opened the winners' account in the 18th minute.
Further Cork scores from goalkeeper Rory Twohig (two-point free), Éanna Lynch and Conrad Murphy left it 0-5 apiece at the break.
A Jacob Barry goal gave the Rebels the lead for the first time, 1-6 to 0-7, shortly after the restart. But Kerry battled back to take the lead through Cillian Moynihan before Tom Whooley sent it to extra-time. The full-time score was 1-9 to 0-12.
As the rain continued to pour down, Cork held a 1-11 to 0-13 lead at the end of the first period of extra-time before another Twohig free and a Ben Hegarty effort from play saw them home.
Both teams progress to All-Ireland quarter-finals where they will face either Kildare or Meath who contest the Leinster final on Friday.
