Three two-pointers from Harry Plunkett late on steered Tullamore past Ferbane to a 0-19 to 1-12 victory in yesterday’s Offaly senior football championship final at Glenisk O’Connor Park.
A repeat of the last two SFC finals in the Faithful County, Ferbane looked like avoiding a third straight defeat on this stage when Darragh Flynn’s goal in the 57th minute put them into a 1-12 to 0-12 lead.
However, Plunkett, who finished with 0-8, sent over the next four scores for the holders, including three two-pointers, to seal Tullamore’s three-in-a-row success and fourth title in five years.
The scores of Cian Johnson had helped Ferbane to take in a 0-8 to 0-5 lead at half-time and, while Tullamore got in front by the 40th minute through Diarmuid Egan, they’d fall behind again when the points of Johnson, Michael Fox and Brian Carroll were backed up by Flynn’s major with three minutes remaining.
The holders dug deep in the closing stages to earn frees for marksman Plunkett to sail over and he’d add one from play from beyond the arc to help seal his club’s 30th county SFC success.
