Replying To tomsmith:  "Tomsmith here

He is playing Centre half forward, in the 80. s it was he was playing on the forty
Snowflakes probably never heard of playing on the forty ."
Never understood myself where 'on the forty' was supposed to be.

There used to be a 50-yard line, and then it became the 45-metre line. What or where was this mystical 40 that people were supposed to be on?

Replying To Seanfanbocht:  "17 and 19 thousand at AI football semis, 9k at a Leinster hurling Final.
Crowds WERE small in the 80s."
Crowds were small is right. There were 8,500 at the All Ireland senior hurling semi final between Galway and Cork in 1985. I was at it. A young Galway side won by 4-12 to 5-05 on a very wet early August afternoon. They don't play semi finals in August anymore.

Replying To county man:  "That is very true. If someone brought you home a match program from an inter-county game in the 80's, you'd be delighted and read it cover to cover. Would never be asked to bring one home now."
Some "person" stole my program off my seat at the Lory Meagher Cup final last year when I went out to use the toilet. It's one I'd have liked to have kept (ie thrown in the box will all my other programs never to be looked at again).

Nothing is sacred any more.
