Wexford Hurling thread 2024

At times we get too fixated with how others see us abd looking to be accepted to top table let's nit wait to be invited we need to fate crash the party. . From the outside we probably do seem like also rans and any time we get a win over any top teams they ask how and why . That's whee we are same as we do when beaten by so called lesser counties like last year .
We should focus more on how we did it what worked and who now is looking like they can step up . I d be more optimistic for the future knowing we have players stepping up it was never going to be a quick fix in fairness.
Getting a draw vkilkenny knowing chin did nt excel should give us a boost . But no matter how bad he could play he creates a dilemma for opposition which in theory should give other forwards more space and opportunity .
As regards sny returning players they need to keep the workrate of the new guys up if they can dislodge them and vice versa . Think the all round upping of intensity and workrate is the reason we sem to be improving as well as definite style and better more fluid game plan .
Only time will tell if come championship we gave improved enough to make leinster finsl or 3rd position woukd take either at present and be thankful Keith Rossiter and his team ae giving youth its chance . Offaly game Saturday is huge in fact we most likely think we should win doing it is another matter and doing it with consistent performances week on week .
Good luck Saturday nothing and everything to fear just the way it should be .

Replying To Viking66:  "Shane Mcgrath said in his column today 9 of the starters from the AIF didn't feature Sunday in the League last but it's actually only 7. And all the subs who came on in the AIF for Kilkenny who are still on the panel featured on Sunday last also. So that's 10 players who played Sunday also played in last year's AIF. Why is there this narrative that we are only winning because we are playing second string teams? Eddie Scally on KCLR said only 4 of Galways Walsh Cup team started in the Leinster final last year but 6 of their starting Walsh Cup side played in the AISF last year for Galway, and 3 of the subs they brought on in the Walsh Cup final also played in the AISF. That's 9 players played for Galway in both the AISF last year and Walsh Cup final this year."
Fella in Kilkenny reminded me you may as well say 11 of Kilkennys team from Sunday as David Blanchfield would've played in the AIF only he was injured.

Hopefully we get a good crowd in. Should be a good competitive game Offaly won't be afraid of us. We will need all the lads to be at their best.

That's really starting to grate on me too. Seems that Wexford seldom if ever get any credit from certain quarters of the media. For all the talk of us "only playing against second string teams", none of them are pointing out how our team differs from the one that beat Kilkenny in the championship last year:

- Only four who started that match also started in the League last Sunday (D. Reck, K. Foley, Jacko, Chin)
- Just two more who started last year also saw any action on Sunday (Cathal Dunbar and Simon Donohoe, with Donohoe only being on for a couple of minutes)
- Last Sunday's League team also had two starters who came on as subs last year (Conor Foley and Conor Hearne).

So, last Sunday's starting team included eleven players who didn't start our biggest championship game of last year, and seven who saw no action in it at all. And yet these other "pundits" seem to believe it's only been Kilkenny and Galway shaking things up and trying something new.

That will never change until we start winning titles. You can say we beat this team beat that team but at the end of the day to people not from Wexford they see us as also rans and are probably right. It's up to the team to get themselves at the top table and earn the respect of the rest of the country.

Wexford (and Dublin, Offaly, Waterford) will not be part of the "top tier" until they start beating the top tier teams in championship.
Its no use winning league or Walsh Cup matches, and people do naturally lean towards the "Top team had half a team" mantra.
A guy in work here said Anthony Daly was talking about a sweeper on League Sunday and then the Wexford Hurling Podcast talked about no sweeper! Were they watching the same match ?

Couldn't agree more, perfect example Walsh Cup final Galway used 22 players 9 of which played or came on in the AI semi final last July, so 41% of the players they used, in the same game we used 20 players 7 of whom played against KK last May plus Damien Reck who was injured last year so 8 out of 20 is 40% yet there was 1 claim we basically bet a Galway development team, the excuse this week was Galway rested players while our missing players were injured.

I've no issue people not rating us as we haven't delivered in championship cause they have a point, what annoys me is things like this week where on reviews of KK/ Wex there's a mention of a missing TJ, Deegan, Huw Lawlor but no mention of a missing Liam Ryan, ROC or O'Hanlon.

In fairness I'd say its impossible for the pundits on the League Sunday to cover everything properly given the amount of games, FWIW we didn't play a sweeper but Hearne particularly dropped back from midfield to the HB line alot against the wind.

That's more or less my point. They're quick to say things like "the 'top' team had only half a team", but they're not so quick to say "but it was the same for the other team as well".

As for Daly - he also said that Conor Foley scored three points, not two. And there was something else he said that I didn't think was accurate either, but it slips my mind right now what exactly it was. Anyway, it'd be enough to make you wonder if he'd actually seen the match at all, or even key moments over and above the five minutes of highlights that were actually shown.

True too. But it's still irritating. Cork and Clare haven't won anything since we last did either though and noone talks about them like that.

I'd wonder were any of them watching the match. I know Mcgrath, Daly, Brennan and Scally weren't because they said so themselves.

They showed 1 of Molloy's scores and he said it was Corey Byrne Dunbar.

Jeez lads, yere getting way too hung up on how many lads played in some game last year, they had 6, we had 6 etc lads going on about what Kilkenny thought of us again, it's such a weak mentality. It's Walsh cup and league games, no one is at full strength. I'd say it's more the quality of players missing they were on about if anything, Daithi Burke, Conor Whelan, Cathal Mannion, Padraic Mannion, Joesph Cooney together are probably going to improve a team more than the other 10 lads who played last year, same as if Lee Chin, Damien Reck were missing for us, be bigger loss than maybe up to 6 more starters.....think we wouldve seen that last year.Seen after league game that 6 of the lads who played in Walsh Cup final for Galway aren't on the panel anymore.....in other words, who cares, move on, it's done. Who cares if people think it was Kilkenny or Galway B team, who cares what Kilkenny think, they sure as hell don't care what Wexford are thinking about them. There's this annoying obsession with Kilkenny in Wexford and it isn't vice versa, if anything it's nearly got worse since we started getting upper hand, haven't moved off that mindset since 2017. Sure biggest rival and embrace the rivalry but don't let it dictate whole year every time....Clare get a bit of heat for thinking Limerick is their all irelandbut at least they beat the rest in Munster too, just can't seem to win in Croke Park.

We have beaten Kilkenny the last 2 years in championship. The only Munster county that can say the same is Limerick. Last year we were the only 2 counties to beat them in the championship.

I think Cork do get a lot of critism about lacking fight and guts but with so much underage success lately, there's still the caveat that they could come and have so much potential but it's probably because of that potential and do Beat a few big teams that keeps them relevant and in the mix to an extent. But they do get a lot of critsim. Clare get a bit more of a free pass. They're definitely in top 3 teams but didn't get much criticism for semi final losses. Wexford probably just not in any limelight to get any air time or get any interest, so lads in media prone to do some lazy analysis on them and so may people don't be watching wexford closely last few years that they don't get pulled on it. Happens lower counties all the time. Only one way to get back in limelight and that's start winning games v these top counties. Just the way media works.

I agree nobody is a full strength but by some of the rhetoric around ye think we're at full strength and the other teams aren't, its not an isolated incident either its happening time and time again which is irritating people in my view. If its a 1 off nobody cares but its happened the last 3 weeks in my view. Personally speaking anyway I've no hang up's with Kilkenny, biggest priority in my view is been in the best possible position to take on Dublin and Antrim in the 1st 2 games in Leinster. Also from chatting to work colleagues up in that neck of the woods there's plenty in KK who are mindful at this stage of their poor record against us.

Once again this thing with Kilkenny....also haven't beaten Westmeath in two years or won a game outside Leinster since 2016 or beaten Galway since 96. Galway haven't lost a round Robin game to Kilkenny in those 2 years too but games go up a notch in importance after round Robin, Clare haven't lost to Limerick in round Robin in last two yeas either.....both have yet to beat Limerick or Kilkenny in big games or knockout games, i.e games that matter more.

If we're to be realistic about getting out of Leinster we'll probably have to be 2/2 by the time we play Galway in the park.
