Every year, really? Have you got any evidence to back this up?

Why would Kilkenny send back tickets? Kilkenny haven't won an All Ireland since 2015 which is eight years ago; a long time for a county like Kilkenny. Kilkenny are underdogs but are playing well with a strong bench while Limerick are missing some of their key defenders. Kilkenny's new manager seems to have a game plan and has managed the introduction of players off the bench well to date. If I were a Kilkenny fan, I would be expecting that this team will go close. Finally Kilkenny scored 2-22 against a better Limerick defence last year plus Limerick have only reached the 30 point mark once this year.

In fairness, Kilkenny aren't noted for travelling to matches in big numbers

Looks wet tomorrow afternoon in Croke Park. I wonder will that suit either team or make no difference. Rain is normally a bit of a leveller that favours the underdog but Limerick are very physically strong which might suit rainy conditions. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2306 - 22/07/2023 17:27:21 2496159 Link 0 |
They beat the Cats in the rain in 1973.

Cats minus 4 first team players. Cats beat Limerick in rain 2014.

Yes Kilkenny were injury hit in 1973 minus the great Eddie Keher and others. It's Limerick with the injury problems tomorrow minus two of their starting back six and minus a reserve defender.

Limerick were missing Jim O'Donnell their First Choice Center Back that long ago day and Mickey Graham their Center Forward. O'Donnell was MOM versus Clare in the first Round but aggravated an old injury in the Munster Final (He had suffered a broken leg In 1971 and never fully recovered, Graham one of the finest and most versatile players LK ever produced had his leg was broken in the League Final. If we want to go the 'others' route the best Corner Back in Limerick in the '70s was Mick O'Loughlin of Kilteely but for reasons to do with his work he was not in a position to commit to the strict training regime Mickey Cregan had introduced. Leonard Enright played his first game for V Wexford in Bellfield as as 18 year old in 1970. He however did not commit either until about '79. However after that he went on to be one of the best Full Backs in the game and did not retire until he was 36, when he was still going strong. He would have been a massive addition as a 21/22 year old in '73 and '74 The man that replaced Jim Treacy was Phil Cullen and he had a fine game on Frankie Nolan, a man who had scored two goals against Tipperary. holding him to three points from play exactly the same amount he got off JT in '74. Eamon Morrissey the other KK player that was off was supposed to be going to Australia having played in the Leinster Final.- however he never went and though he was only 25 or 6 he never played with KK again. Very strange indeed. You would think nobody else ever had an injury but KK the way some people hear go on. Eoin Larkin was going on about the loss of Shefflin and Hogan in 2010. Tipp beat them by nine points that day. Maybe it is is time he too got over it. Hammy Dawson a colourful Limerick supporter and Barry Henriques, a Sports Commentator with CL/KK FM. were interviewed in Radio Eireann the other night, Barry referred to '73 and '74 and had to get in a dig about injured KK players. Hammy left it go but later balanced it up succintly simply saying 'Lk are short Sean Finn, the best Corner Back of recent years and Declan Hannon a Four time All Ireland and now Ritchie English, but if we are beaten on Sunday we wont be making excuses' I would also remind people that 12 months ago their was a massive injury crises in Limerick especially prior to the Final, but yet they got on with and prevailed anyway. Did you notice that Cian Lynch and Peter Casey were off last year, Guillane and super sub Reidy were clearly hampered by injury and Kyle Hayes was actually a doubtful starter before the game started.
