I would say the Clare q-final last year really opened Egans eyes in relation to needing 20 players ready for SHC, as soon as the Recks went off last year Tony Kelly & Shane O Donnell came to life and won that game for Clare. If we can get 4 or 5 good lads that are new or were on the fringes be it starters or coming in as subs to perform at championship level it will have been a very good Walsh cup & league this year for blooding new guys. The hurlers are there in Wexford, it is just about getting enough game time into these young lads so they are up to speed come May & June. Limerick have subs coming on in AI semi finals & finals and making huge contributions from the bench, that has to be the target for Egan. A sub can't come on and weaken the team or take 10mins to get into a match anymore, that day is gone. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 707 - 17/01/2023 09:37:06 2452794 Link 1 |
I think Lyng is an excellent manager. He will know most of those younger panel members inside out having managed them before. Drennan has looked good the half dozen or so times I've seen him play up until last year but I'm not sure if he will be a championship starter this year. There's a fair jump from u20 to Senior. It was different when it was u21.

Agreed he would have to contribute from open play. But he is a good young hurler who would surely only improve if he plays regularly during the League.

I still think Flood is a better forward his defensive game isn't really up to intercounty. I think that's why Egan didn't bring him on much last year in the championship. And you would still have Mogie (hopefully), Donohue, Bailey, Joe OC, Conor Firman, Mcguckin, and Oisin Foley who have previous championship experience. That would make 24 lads along with the 15 Yellow named and Flood and ROC. Hopefully some of Clarke, the 2 Murphys, Hearne, Higgins, Kyle Firman, Clancy, and some of last year's u20s who aren't still u20 this year might stake a claim during the League also. You'd really want 27 lads in around the same standard who are used to playing with eachother to cope with injuries and rotation. Against Clare Chin ROC and Dwyer were carrying knocks, and Dunbar was missing altogether, Damien Reck got a knock to the head in the 1st half, Shane Reck tired and got injured as the 2nd half reached its climax, and we just didn't have the lads to replace them. Hopefully Egan sticks with any of the lads he has been using so far who are playing well enough as the League goes on. They all need as much Senior Intercounty experience as possible. What age is Ross Banville lads? Hopefully he starts again Saturday night we need to give likes of him , Richie Lawlor and Ian Carty as much game time throughout the league.

Ross is 22, will be turning 23 this year. Played on u20 team in 2019&20.

Actually think he'd contribute as much from open play as few lads last that got a lot of game time last year - Mikie Dwyer, McGukian, Oisin, Jacko etc.

Fanning to be fair to him was decent in Davy's tenure and improved in that time but it looks like he hasn't recovered from the Westmeath game last year, his confidence seems shot.

There are still terrace tickets for sale on the Kilkenny GAA website. 80% of tickets sold so far.

Think there are some down here too. They are gone off the Leinster GAA site or at least they were at the weekend.

Every championship game last year there was a major error. Lawler deserves a chance.

The game on Saturday is small and big as the Walsh Cup is not a very prestigious competition. Magpie2 (Wexford) - Posts: 248 - 17/01/2023 15:32:13 2452876 Link 0 |
Agreed, Oisin Foley played well against Clare but Banville would be ahead of these lads as a natural scorer in my eyes.

Add Rory O Connor and Oisin Foley to the forward line and this could well be our starting 15 for championship. Would be great to see Banville , Carty and Richie Lawlor push for starting places. Also think its time to give James Lawlor a run in goal. Fanning has been a fantastic servant but you have to feel for him his confidence seems shot

Ref last Sunday is actually a St Patricks clubman originally now living in Westmeath and affiliated to a club up there, same with Paud O'Dwyer intercounty ref from Tinryland in carlow is orignally a cushinstown native.

Oisin Foley played well in Nowlan Park too. And did the unglamorous work that forwards have to do in the modern game well apart from getting the goal.

This page is great in that its like Tommy Tiernan on that bus in Father Ted, happy one minute and depressed the next. Story of being a Wexford supporter? Same as being a Dublin hurling one. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1101 - 17/01/2023 17:45:36 2452902 Link 0 |
I kinda agree although I don't know if that's an exceptionally high bar. I usually think Jack O'Connor is being played out of position (Would be best at wing-back but we've a lot of potential half-backs and not enough half-forwards) plus he can be a ball-winning outlet at times. Oisín Foley is probably the most comparable to Ross Banville in that he can be on the periphery of games at senior intercounty level but he is an excellent shooter from the half-forward line. I'm not generally sold on either Mikie Dwyer or Charlie McGuckin although if McGuckin was played in midfield rather than half-forward line and if he was told to never shoot and instead to look for a quick pass straightaway, he could be much more effective at this level. FWIW, in an ideal scenario, I'm not sure I'd have any of the above as starters aside from Jacko but we do lack depth in our attack.
