Replying To Gleebo:  "No? Seems a lot like it to me.

If it's a free house you're after, I'd advise you to enter the many GAA club draws round this country offering just that (or almost free, €50 isn't much of an outlay compared with the average cost of a mortgage in Ireland, these days). No one is suggesting here that all social housing should be free, or that people should be given luxury accommodation for nothing, that's what's called a strawman. Plenty of people in Ireland have bought their own council house eventually through incentive schemes.

But I think it's fair to say that every one should have the option of some sort of roof over their heads at night. You could faithfully pay your mortgage repayments for 29 years out of a 30 year agreement, but if you lose your job or get sick and can't repay the last payments, the bank will take the roof out from over your head the same as if you didn't pay anything. Never did seem equitable to me.

And many people renting privately in Dublin especially are paying greater sums of money each month than those with mortgages, but still can't progress to home ownership because the exorbitant cost of renting saps their savings. Makes no sense and is ultimately self-defeating...

Your comments surrounding tales of people getting large houses off the taxpayer have a strong whiff of "dúirt bean liom go ndúirt bean léi". People say the same thing about immigrants and refugees all the time, invariably such tales tend to be BS.

And don't forget, people enter into a mortgage voluntarily, it's a choice. Nobody forces anyone into one, although increasingly the younger generations are being priced out of them. The more I think of it, most of Michael Davitt's ideas- fair rent, freedom of sale, fixity of tenure- are still relevant today.

Ireland is a rich country by global standards, even if a lot of people are struggling at the moment. We should be able to provide basic needs-food, shelter, clothing, heating- to our people who need it. And certainly, there's something very wrong in the great scheme of things where mostly American venture capital funds can snap up entire housing estates before they enter the market for ordinary Irish people. It's almost as if they want large numbers of Irish people to be stuck in rentals for their own enrichment, or something?"
A GAA Club draw is hardly an appropriate comparison.
People do get large houses for nothing.
The Radharc na Gréine estate here in galway city is a good example.
Underfloor heating, 4 bedrooms, lovely houses, bigger and more modern than many private homes, given to people who don't work, some have never worked, have no intention of working, and who will be looked after, while those who contribute will by your own admission face the prospect of the bank taking their house from under them if they fall ill.

Yes, a mortgage is technically a choice, but many people won't qualify for a council house, so it's either buy, or spend your life renting, and then get booted out when you retire and can't pay rent anymore,so it's a necessity for many people.
Also, deciding not to work, go to college, etc?
Also a choice, though the people who make this choice seem to get looked after. Brilliant isn't it?

And those stories you claim to "invariably" turn out to be bs, aren't "invariably" bs. Some of them are true, some of them aren't.

Look on the brightside gleebo, the longer people are stuck renting, and the higher the rents are, the the more money the government rakes in on tax, thus providing more funds for social housing.

Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people.
Do you want names or something?
Although it's technically incorrect to say their getting them for free,, taking into account the paltry sum of money they pay the council versus the fact they're protected from mortgage hikes, rent hikes etc, it's probably more appropriate to say that they're getting paid to live there.

Gimme a break here, I'm having to deal with a guy whose never met me and doesn't know anything about my life telling me that what I've seen with my own eyes is not happening.

Galway9801, I know we don't agree on certain things but I'm fully behind you on this subject. People who want to better themselves the most are penalized the most.

Well, based on what you've been posting here, it should be fairly easy (and much less stressful) to get a luxury house bought and maintained by the exchequer in perpetuity, so under those circumstances I'm surprised that the mortgage market hasn't collapsed again already. Unless of course, what you're posting is (at best) exaggerated.

A strong whiff of "I'm alright Jack" about that last comment. But given the composition of the current government, I think it's unlikely that we will see any great changes. I mean, they've only had 20 years in government between them to solve the housing crisis, the health crisis, the cost of living crisis, to combat emigration levels etc. and have made a complete bags of all of those issues.

Thats nonsense. They didnt get houses for nothing.
spending many years renting shouldnt be seen as a bad thing
In Germany the rate of home ownership isnt near what it is here and it isnt a problem.

Not at all Breffni, the health service North and South is under pressure, and we have people scrounging their way through life, getting all the benefits going and contributing F all. As the Galway man says, see what happens if a working family some falls. behind in their mortage, while their next-door neighbor is living for free and if something goes wrong with house, they are crying at the landlord looking it fixed.

This scenario is incredibly rare no matter how much you both push it. Also, direct your ire at the banks who are responsible for it, not people you consider beneath you.

Nope, I've actually done reasonably well for myself, but I know people who haven't and could do with a bit of help.

Far easier to be a smart a**e than to engage in a little critical thinking, though. You've cornered the market there, well done.

I see that some Meath footballer has made it onto a boy band. I think all the Meath team have the sort of qualities that guys like Louis Walsh and Simon Cowan look for in guys to form a boy band.

I'm not a victim and don't claim to be. More snide remarks. As mentioned in a previous post I've been quite lucky regarding my house, and am in a good position mortgage wise, and I'm quite grateful for that.
You're talking about having a roof over one's head.
Tell me why one family have to pay a large mortgage or large rents to have a roof over their head while another family get one for the monthly price of a night out, and are protected from mortgage hikes etc.

It's not incredibly rare. It simply isn't.
Is it really so hard for you to believe that if a government offers social housing as well as extensive social supports that many its citizens are going to take advantage of that?

I remember once talking about this type of thing with a friend of mine, who refused to believe that some people are voluntarily unemployed. No joking, he really did believe that.
Worst thing is we had several mutual friends who were out of work and not looking for work. He didn't even have to look further than his phone contact list to disprove his naive notions, yet still he persisted.

While I agree there are people who use the system and don't actively look for work these numbers are always exaggerated. I don't have several mutual friends who are not looking for work. Top of my head I could probably think of 15 or 20 people in my home town that i know are constantly ducking and diving but they are not in some great situation. Smoking and drinking cans at home is not something to be pointing to and saying how handy they have it.
