I agree that the setup is a disaster in football, but I totally disagree about that in hurling. I don't think that hurling could be set up any better than the 5-tiers ye have at the moment. It ensures that there are little or no pigeon-shoots, with most teams boxing at an appropriate weight level.

Galway are in Leinster because they are too good for their own province. Kerry would be in Leinster because they are not good enough for their own province. It's called selective judgement.

It's called logic.

Exactly and that tells you that the provincial system has no logic at all.

You are 100% correct. What is illogical is that in a country as small as Ireland an all island competition is organised on a regional basis. If we were a country as big as the US it would make sense. And the logic of having all teams thrown into a hat

Exactly. The provincial system, being used as a part of a hurling national championship is like trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. But let's not get bogged down about that now. That subject has been covered on here, ad nauseam, for years. Let's leave the debate about the pros and cons about all that for the winter months, when there's not much else to talk about. The 'Topic' at hand is 'Hurling Championship 2022'. Roll on next weekend. Up the Cats! Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2702 - 09/04/2022 20:31:20 2410411 Link 0 |
What is the chance of an upset in the leinster hurling championship game between Dublin and Laois this weekend. The league game a few weeks ago was a dreadful game with absolutely no drive in either team Dublin won by 10 points with a bit in hand. There's also a few reports that a group of the Laois players were on the Porter for a couple of days before that game (paddy's day etc). The strides Laois made under Brennan seem to be a long way away with a return to the big defeats from the previous Plunkett regime forecasted for the championship ahead. Thoughts anyone? I never understood why they reappointed Cheddar in the first place.

You were very doom and gloom this time last year too. And then Laois retained their Liam McCarthy status and came within a whisker of knocking out Waterford. Did Cheddar stand on your sandwiches at school?

Hey y'all there in Ireland from sunny Florida. Hope y'all in fine fettle for the hurling championship that is about to start on the weekend. Here are my predictions for the first round games; only McCarthy Cup, as that's what I know about, given that the current holders are from my ancestral home. No disrespect meant to the teams in the McDonagh, Meagher, Rackard, and Ring. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2171 - 12/04/2022 13:27:33 2410660 Link 0 |
I've nothing against cheddar it's definitely not his problem if groups of players are on the beer it was similar in his last term players ill disciplined and several heavy defeats as a result. We lost by 30 points to Waterford in the league this year conceding 7 goals despite playing 2 extra defenders. Cheddar is well respected within the county but that's no good if hasn't the respect of the players. If we lose heavily to Dublin then just watch the white towel coming in seen it all before.

I won't be so audacious as to predict scores but I have my picks alright. Wexford Kilkenny Dublin Waterford Draw Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3465 - 12/04/2022 13:44:11 2410671 Link 0 |

It ain't being audacious boy, it is just being interested. I have paid money in Ireland many times in the past to predict the score of a game, where a club is selling lines to predict the score of that game. Would you refuse to write down the score and support the club becoz you'd feel audacious if you did? And here on HS, you can do it for free! Wise-up! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2171 - 12/04/2022 14:03:35 2410675 Link 0 |
I hear that he's handy on the check book, as Laois puts much more of its resources into football. Strange that, given that the county has 1 AI hurling title, yet, none in football! And in hurling the county is in the top division or was until recently. In football it was in the 3rd division or was until recently. A most bewildering Irish county! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2171 - 12/04/2022 14:57:55 2410695 Link 1 |
Laois are still in Division 1 hurling next year . Offaly got relegated

You still did well in the Championship last year apart from against Wexford.
