A decision has been made. Tweaks can be made here and there. This should more or less be the end of the format debate. Let's get on with the game!

Whilst not perfect it's a massive step in the right direction.

I think if the league and provincials were played in parallel we'd have ourselves a really strong structure to the season.

Perhaps you can answer this question for me.
If next year Mayo win the League Div. 1 they are then qualified for the All-Ireland Championship. Their inclusion in the Connacht championship would only serve to eliminate another Connacht team from the All-Ireland Championship, if they progress to the Connacht final also, as the the eight provincial finalists make the premier group of sixteen.

There has to be a carrot to win the province. I think the GAA wanted this voted in with changes and tweaks to follow. One humble suggestion from myself is that the provincial winners should host a group stage i.e. provincial winner gets 3 home games and all other teams get 1 home game.
It is arguable that the Tailteann Cup winner should be awarded a Top 16 place in the following year to give it a meaningful carrot.

I kinda see what you mean (if they didn't make the final then two other teams would be guaranteed of their place), but it's important to incentivise the provincial championships by ensuring the finalists make the last 16 and then seeding them ahead of league positions.

The Tailteann Cup winners do get into next year's Top 16, don't they?

I'm not sure to be honest. I haven't seen any mention from today's vote to suggest that the Tailteann Cup winner will be included. There might be some tweaks in October. One would imagine that Division 3 and 4 counties will bring forward such a proposal.

Ah yes that sounds like a wonderful idea well thought out with your green and gold blinkers on.Im just wondering would you be able to come with anymore bright ideas to give Kerry a free pass into the Final itself.

Straight knockout I believe? Think for the Sam Maguire it's similar to the qualifier system in the Tommy Murphy Cup days, and I think it's straight knockout for the Tailteann Cup. Or am I wrong? Cos i just checked the current Rule 6.28, and it looks like the Div 1 and 2 teams who didn't make the provincial final play off in round 1, and the winners play the provincial runners-up in round 2, and the winners join the provincial champions in the group stage. Tier 2 is a straightforward knockout. Not sure whether that's all been overridden by some diktat from on high.

.GAA got what they wanted, more Inter County games with more money & more TV rights money.

GPA also got what they wanted as it means more money for them with their percentage of all GAA commercial revenue.

Pat Spillane & other analysts complaining about player burnout, but wanting more games. Now there will be 65% more games along with Sigerson games, so can't see how player welfare & burnout is not going to be an issue. Inter County players will now start in December, go right through to August & then be expected to play club football, no time off, burn out, no social life, lets see how long that lasts before they are complaining again. Spillane like others though has a vested interest, they are all making money from the game as pundits/journalists, more Inter County games, more money.

Not once in all the debates were club players mentioned, once again their season changes, Inter County will now run from January till the end of August & county managers wont allow club players play with their clubs or have club fixtures, so back to the same old system. GAA really is all about elitism for the 2% of its membership, it is a two tier Association & this format will only ensure more & more club players dropping out as is happening in big numbers year on year. The empty rhetoric from all presidents about grassroots is a joke, they have all been queuing up promoting this format to get it over the line, zero concern for 98% of its members.

Its now an Association that is all about money, the number of paid managers now at club & county level is an epidemic. The GPA are now the main decision makers within the GAA, clubs & club players are merely sh&t on the shoe now.
Not one high profile person now willing to stand up & speak out, all sheep or afraid it will affect their climb up the GAA ladder or else are one of the vested interests making big sums of cash out of it.

A very good move. There's no perfect system. However, there is a very imperfect system; the current one.

I'd actually have 3 tiers: Senior, intermediate and junior, but one step at a time. I don't expect CP to be able to run before it can walk.

Thank you for that Leitrim poster..I'm not being smart but you said yourself by using the words I think..can some top Gaa official actually say what is happening in 2022..they have to realize that there is football happening outside all the so called big counties..

They can change the system as often as they like but when football continues to be played in its current boring fashion more and more people including players will turn their backs on the game… This is only though up for the purpose of extracting more money from fools willing to pay good money to watch this drosss…not for the betterment of the game….

It has been difficult to get clear information on the new championship structure. Here is what I've gotten from a few different sources:
1. The previous year's Tailteann Cup winners, if not a Division 2 team, will enter the Sam Maguire competition in place of the next lowest-seeded team from Division 2.
2. The Sam Maguire will be made up of 16 teams as following: four provincial champions(1st seeds); four provincial runners-up (2nd seeds); next four highest ranked teams at end of league (3rd seeds); last four highest ranked teams at end of league (4th seeds).
3. Each team will play one round at home (provincial winners will play their first game at home), one away and one at a neutral venue.
4. The second placed team will be given home advantage when playing against a third placed team from a different group, in the preliminary quarter-finals.

Point 1. seems to be that a Tailteann Cup winner in Division 2 have to earn their place through the league or provincial championship. Division 3 and 4 counties are given the carrot of a Top 16 through winning the Tailteann Cup in the previous year. If I'm understanding that correctly, it is a typical GAA solution for a GAA problem. I think they've found the right balance with it to be fair though. Division 3 and 4 counties will need that carrot the most. The GAA have found away of discouraging Division 2 teams from getting in the way too much!!

There'll be plenty of dead rubbers I'd guess, and I can see a situation arising where there'll be a lull in interest between the provincial finals and the quarter finals, but anything that reduces the game to training sessions ratio is a good step imo.
