That was the worst performance I seen from the minors all year. They were still by far the better team against a Kerry team which unusually was very defensive. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11429 - 25/06/2022 21:38:56 2427514 Link 0 |
Perhaps "efficient" was the wrong word to use about yesterday. But I was impressed that we could malfunction from the kickouts and frees and still beat a Kerry team who had boxed us in. Young Clarke conjured a goal from nothing and the forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over. Very rare in a Mayo side that our forward line may be the strongest unit in our team. Galway will be a different proposition in the final, and it may not help that we are playing them for a third time this year. But if the management team can keep the squad focused then we have a good chance. Irrespective of the result, there are several very decent prospects in this minor team, which is a good omen, given that for several years previous we had been getting hammerings at this level from Ros and Galway. Unlucky Mayo was hoping ye would beat Kerry but not to be. Will be sad to see the likes of Cillian, Keegan and O Shea and Mc Loughlin go, good servants and would walk into any team in Connacht. I feel Mayo were too one dimensional this year and with players like Durcan and Ruane very poor all year, it was going to be tough. Rob Hennelly - had a good game and year, kickouts have been good, needs to be more consistent with ling range frees tommy132 (Mayo) - Posts: 619 - 28/06/2022 10:17:41 2428251 Link 0 |
One issue any incoming manager needs to address is a left footed free taker. ponga (Mayo) - Posts: 658 - 29/06/2022 12:58:00 2428604 Link 0 |
Evan Regan probably. There's no obvious solution to this. Orme is a decent free taker, maybe Paddy Heneghan. Are any of those good enough to start? MayoDan (Mayo) - Posts: 434 - 29/06/2022 13:50:29 2428620 Link 0 |
I think Regan has ended his inter county days. If Orme was good enough he'd surely have had a go with the Mayo team. Heneghan is interesting, did he tske them for the U20s? Anyone else?

I seen a few Westport games last year. Why was Colm Moran not involved with Mayo this year? FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2839 - 29/06/2022 14:33:38 2428646 Link 0 |
A bit late, but hard luck last Sunday lads. I honestly thought ye'd do it and was looking forward to two Connacht teams in the SFs. This team has been at the business end of the championship for years now, so perhaps the lads will enjoy an actual summer off (wind and rain not withstanding) and will come back next season recharged. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3143 - 29/06/2022 18:40:29 2428720 Link 1 |
The Mayo team now has very few left from Horans first stint…look at the line up of the 2012 final v Donegal. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11429 - 05/07/2022 13:49:27 2429874 Link 0 |
Rare that the Mayo thread is so quite.. everyone still hungover from last years AI perhaps. Cbar (Mayo) - Posts: 332 - 25/07/2022 09:28:24 2434106 Link 0 |
According to Ah Ref Solan will get the job. A combo of him, Rochford, Ray Dempsey with John Maughan in charge of self - assertiveness and media training would be interesting!

Would like to see Rochford back personally, but the County Board made a mess of his departure (what a surprise!) and he would be well entitled to tell them to lump it. Will be interesting to see if the County Championships can unearth some gold nuggets, after all, Jack Carney got a run this after his exploits with Kilmeena. A dark cloud has been cast over south Mayo. Condolences to the Mullin and Ryan families on their tragic loss. RIP Brian and Sarah. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11429 - 26/07/2022 15:00:59 2434603 Link 4 |

Whoever gets the job no player should be guaranteed a starting place if he's not in form. I think an outside county selector should be scouting to unearth potential county players in this long stretch into the 2023 league. I'm not a fan of the hiring a coach because 'sure he was over them when they were U21s, sure he knows all the good players' isn't as important as finding a better squad of players and continuing to improve them. Hopefully a manager with an impressive record of game management or the ability to assemble a team that can manage games.

Rochford has done nothing forDonegal football since joining them, he is their main coach and they have gone back big time under his coaching, just 50 yds forward and100 yards back with each phase of play. jacktheboy (Donegal) - Posts: 452 - 27/07/2022 15:39:12 2434904 Link 0 |
I'm not too perturbed by what Rochford did or didn't achieve with Donegal, he wasn't the main man there and it's a different bunch of players, different challenges and probably a different style of play. In any case, Rochford lives in Co. Mayo, so he might well be more familiar with what's happening at club, underage level etc. in his home county. He has gone closest to winning an All-Ireland for us IMO, although I think that is perhaps beyond the present group for the moment. Given the mess made of the county's GAA finances, it will probably come down to a choice between locally based candidates in any case. We spend more than almost anyone else on our senior team every year so I don't see why money would be an issue. I wouldn't bring back Rochford for now anyway. They need a new voice in there to light a fire under players. Going back to a previous manager who ultimately didn't win anything isn't the answer. Give Dempsey or Solan a shot for a couple of years.
