The Roscommon team McStay took over was promoted to Division 1 under John Evans. We had reached 7 U21 Connacht finals in a row winning 4 that really should have been 6 wins as we left two of those titles behind us so winning 1 senior Connacht title in three years under McStay was the minimal target achieved. The lack of consistency under him was seen in the two games Mayo in 2017 and we shipped some almighty scores because of focus more on front football than focusing much on the defence. MacHale isn't going to change expect all of that again if he's part of Mayos management next year. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3926 - 30/07/2022 14:00:11 2435405 Link 0 |
Was McHale doing most of the coaching and McStay doing the managing and some coaching during their Roscommon days?

Coaching was mainly done by MacHale.. McStay has great trust him and labelled him as one of the best coaches in Ireland. On strength and conditioning side he appointed a young lad that was only learning the ropes at the time and we never got up to level of the top 6 in S&C under him.

But yet with all this unbelievable talent embedded in the senior side, his successor has done scarcely better than McStay did. One Connacht SFC title in three years, up to Division One, lost the NFL Division Two final to Galway, missed a chance at a quarter-final berth this year. He might also be for the chopping block soon enough… I would be careful about investing too much hope in U21/U20 success. Mayo themselves have won a couple of All-Irelands in that grade in the past 15 years or so, but didn't quite make it over the line at senior level. McStay himself won an U21 All-Ireland as a player, fell short in senior finals and semi-finals. It's not always a great indicator IMO. Anyway, the McStay/Rochford/Buckley/McHale ticket is by far the strongest one declared so far, IMO. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 31/07/2022 07:50:30 2435544 Link 0 |
Yes I believe so. I think roscommon made a huge mistake in getting rid of fergal o donnell to be honest. He had great success in the past but maybe he's not pc enough for some people and isn't a yes man either and county boards don't like that. They basically had a choice between mcstay and o donnell and they went for mcstay and I'm afraid to say it backfired badly.

I have to stay in very underwhelmed by the options. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11429 - 31/07/2022 10:43:31 2435557 Link 0 |
Fergal O'Donnell's estrangement from the County Board is a huge loss to Roscommon football. He's great at working with underage players and of course delivered an All Ireland Minor title out of nowhere for us in 2006. Best of luck to Kevin McStay if he gets the Mayo job. He did deliver the 2017 Connacht title for Roscommon but it ran out of road shortly thereafter. Seems a decent guy but I wouldn't be sure that he's the man for Mayo at this time.

Won the Div 2 final to Galway don't be taking away the one highlight we had this year. Anthony Cunnigham's best year in the championship with us was his first year when we won our hardest won Connacht title since 2001 (beating both Mayo and Galway) covid arrived since then and things have become stale. We currently left in the dark as to whether or not he'll be manager again next year. He'd be already gone if manager of Galway,Mayo with his championship results the last two years. James Horan is the manager that turned things around for you and i don't believe it would have been possible without getting the very best out of and building his senior team around the successful Mayo U21 teams 2016 to 2019. Term two he's built a 2nd team with loads of the 2016 U21 AI winners and U20 runners up. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3926 - 31/07/2022 19:10:19 2435641 Link 1 |
Shaw is going with Richie Feeney from Castlebar Mitchels, Rowland from Islandeady, Paddy Christie from Dublin and Dessie Sloyan from Sligo. He was on the blog stressing his knowledge of the club scene and a desire to be a bit more transparent with supporters. Would see him as the outside horse in the race, given a lack of county experience and a fairly harrowing All-Ireland club defeat with Mitchels in 2016. The way he and his Castlebar management gave Diarmuid Connolly the freedom of Croke Park was fairly striking.

Diarmuid Connolly was Vincents game in 2014. Ballyboden was the later final. Although they Declan's might have been manageing both years?

Going by the Mayo News, it seems that the appointment process is still in train. One would hope that they complete the process in the next few weeks, giving the new management team time to do a bit of scouting during the club championships.

What chance that the county board doesn't see a specific team as a great option but call back some who impressed from different candidate teams and ask them if they could form a management team?

Nothing would surprise me at this point.

Has the Mayo County Board gone on holidays or are they deep in their war room planning the future of the Green and Red. They must be using the cone of silence debating the next manager. cluichethar (Mayo) - Posts: 475 - 15/08/2022 19:28:03 2437568 Link 0 |
The Indo report today that Ray Dempsey has announced his ticket, which apparently includes Oisín McConville and Declan O'Keefe, as well as some Mayo people such as James Burke, Enda Gilvarry and Keith Higgins. According to the report, interviews will take place in the coming days. Hopefully they will get on with it and announce the new manager in the near future. I'm no fan of the the CB but let them at it. This very public managerial selection process is embarrassing. Some of our fans think they have a right to know absolutely everything that goes on. I much prefer the "behind closed doors" approach and not "airing your laundry" in public approach. As ever there is a fascination with all things Mayo GAA from within and outside the county. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11429 - 17/08/2022 17:48:12 2437801 Link 2 |
Ya Mayo football seems to attract a lot of unwanted attention. As far as I know the CB stated they would make the appointment before the end of August so let them at it. We won't thank them for making an incorrect fast decision and as far as I can see... no matter what they do they will come in for undue criticism!
