Not having been to a match in almost 2 years , for most of us it'll be like a jelly and ice cream party for toddlers. It may only be a walsh cup game but when the cats arrive in town it's always something special. I can't imagine either side holding back but of course its a competition to try out new players. Giving them the chance to impress the new management team. Don't think we'll get 5000 in Wexfod park on Saturday but perhaps 2500 or even 3000 leaving their armchairs. A win for us would be a good boost before the bigger competitions commence in a few weeks time. Blockandhook (Wexford) - Posts: 668 - 18/01/2022 13:01:09 2395434 Link 0 |
It's the Walsh cup.... But to be honest, I'm dying to beat them. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3262 - 18/01/2022 18:17:12 2395495 Link 0 |

I got tickets for Laois game and o Byrne cup via the Leinster gaa website. I think with the ballyhale lads playing In club championship we would be looking for a win. It won't be easy never is. Hopefully our shooting is a bit better than the Laois game Wexfordgaa (Wexford) - Posts: 322 - 19/01/2022 07:55:02 2395520 Link 0 |
Wexford ran Kilkenny close in championship last year. Kilkenny won Leinster then lost to Cork. Games in Walsh Cup don't mean much. Outside Limerick, the remaining teams look evenly matched, and can beat each other on a given day. Don't forget that Kilkenny beat Limerick in 2019... can always do it again! Better of what under Davy?

Reckon it was a simple typo and he meant to say "we had the better of them under Davy". Wexford's record v KK was certainly strong during the Davy years.

The head to head across all competitions.

It might have been a very different season had we closed that game out. Thought we were the better side over the 70 minutes. Kilkenny deserved winners after extra time however. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3262 - 19/01/2022 10:03:25 2395537 Link 0 |
I would go for a strong team with a few experiments as I do feel a win vs Kilkenny will win over the crowd and players for Darragh Egan Yellow (Wexford) - Posts: 585 - 19/01/2022 10:27:46 2395545 Link 0 |
Think with the likely experimental nature of both sides and the fact that around 50 different players are going to get game time noone can predict a result. Looking forward to it though should be a good atmosphere at the game!

Between Walsh Cup, League and Championship Davy edged Brian in the head to head. Not many 5 year periods in the history of the games between Wexford and Kilkenny that that would be true of.

When it comes to Kilkenny - experimentation should take a back seat and winning at all costs should be the goal. We can experiment in the next match. Yellow (Wexford) - Posts: 585 - 19/01/2022 10:57:23 2395558 Link 0 |
For what it's worth, yes Davy edged Brian in the Walsh Cup. But in the League and Championship, the spoils were shared. That said, Davy done a great job and lifted Wexford hurling.

A bit of perspective its a Walsh Cup game in January, also its been fairly obvious the league since championship round robin was introduced in 2018 has become essentially championship preparation, Galway were probably the most impressive them of last years league and then were the biggest let down in the championship. No sweeper in the games against Laois and Tipp the last 2 weekends and was told there won't be a designated sweeper this year, and men dropping back will be midfielders or half forwards covering. I believe the players are already impressed by the new manager. bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 19/01/2022 11:37:55 2395568 Link 0 |
I disagree. The next match will be a National League match against Limerick. The time for experimentation is Saturday, particularly since there are unlimited substitutions allowed in Walsh Cup. A win over Kilkenny would be nice all right, but realistically, a win in the Walsh Cup in January is not going to count for much in the long run if it's followed up with a bad start to the League. I agree a win would be great but I think it's more important that some of the younger lads get to play in front of a bit of a crowd for a couple of reasons. Firstly it might incentivise some of the lads who are only really committing now to stick with it and secondly it will get all the younger lads more used to crowd pressure. Alot of the lads who are 21 and under in the panel havent played in front of any sort of crowd what with covid the last couple of years. Some might put their hands up furthur to be included when the panel gets cut for the League also. In any case I'd be guessing Cody will be thinking along the same lines and if we play near enough a first team against Cody's kittens we will be on a hiding to nothing whatever the result.

No this is not the final - if we win we have another match before the Limerick game Yellow (Wexford) - Posts: 585 - 19/01/2022 12:16:40 2395581 Link 0 |
The modern way is not to have any 1 designated sweeper but probably all the half forwards will spend a good chunk of time defending in their own half or even 45 and the inside men bar possibly 1 will spend alot of time defending out around midfield too. And be expected to break forward fast too. Modern players are much fitter and generally faster and are expected to cover more ground in the modern systems of play.
