Replying To MuineachanAbu: "For me it is absolutely fact that South Monaghan has been overlooked. The stats are there in black and white.
I think at Senior Level for our County Team to be successful, you need more options across the county and not just a mass of players from Scotstown/Clontibret/Latton.
Anyway as we roll into the latter stages of the championship, my final pairings are Inniskeen v Scotstown. The battle of North v South and I have no doubt Inniskeen will bring a mass of support. They have shown great strides with a relatively young squad. It also seems this year that they are winning at every code and level including underage which is a telling sign of short and long term intent.
With the big pitch in Clones, Scotstown are hitting their stride and more than likely will breeze past them with bigger sights on Ulster. This is really where they should be focusing considering the adoption of Jack McCarron." Overlooked/Not good enough or not willing to give it what it takes?

Replying To Jjoniel79: "Read what I said again and you'll see I'm referring to the current state of the club setup and its future impact on the county team.
The Hughes brothers are incredible, in my opinion Darren is the county's greatest ever player - just ahead of manzy. And you're right that scotstown have plenty of depth - but both of these lads are well into their 30's and still no one has come along to unseat them from being the backbone of the club or county team. Scotstown haven't produced a player with their size and ability in the what, 15 years since Darren came through - despite their player pool of "100 players". Scotstown are a far less formidable outfit without them and if Kieran was fit, they'd have won that final.
Regardless of scotstowns future I'm more worried by the county team and what is available out there to replace them across the county - especially when looking at the division 1 competition, which like it or not features the teams with the biggest quantity of good footballers. Ballybay, Clontibret, Latton are all still relying heavily on the old dogs - where's the youth? Look at what's happened magheracloone since the Freemans retired, or blayney since Strimmer buttsy and Hanratty left the county team.
Woods and Kearns walked away last year so you've only really got Mohan as a serviceable replacement for the physicality and skill the Hughes boys bring.
As for mulligan, again I'm referring to county level players. Duffy was a county standout player, mulligan hasn't made a dent at that level. And any time I've seen latton in knockout football, it's still all on Duffy - mulligan hasn't done it yet. We'll see how he gets on this weekend…" You're not making any sort of revolutionary claim here. The dogs in the street can see that it's going to be a long time before Monaghan can replace the golden age of McManus, Darren Hughes etc.. These guys come along once in a generation. By the way, what's your reasoning for Darren Hughes being the greatest Monaghan player of all time ahead of McManus? Mansy will be remembered as one of the greats to ever play the game, Darren was a super player for us, but not in the same stratosphere as McManus in this debate. Without McManus we'd have have been a bang average Division 2 side with no Ulster medals for the last 10 years. As for Latton still relying on the old guard… have you been at any Latton games this year? I think they've 3 lads over the age of 30 starting for them. Aaron Mulligan, Shane Slevin and Thomas McPhillips have all been in the county senior setup in the last 18 months and are all u23. Along with this they've had 4 (possibly more) other lads on u20 teams in the last few years. Just because they're fielding Kieran and Owen Duffy you're writing them off as too reliant on the old guard, when in reality, they're anything but. Fancy them to beat Clontibret this weekend.

Totally agree with you here. McManus will be in the history books for a lifetime for what he has done year in and year out for Monaghan football. 2 Ulster Medals, 3 all stars, several Ulster all stars, 4 International rules series winning man of the match in one also, Div2 and Div 3 National Leagues, 6 Senior Championships, 3 Senior leagues, And many man of the match performances throughout this career.
Yes there has been many other greats on these teams such as Hughes x2, Walshe, Wylies, Jap, Freeman but McManus is head and shoulders above them all IMO.
Regarding Latton, I also agree. Them young lads you have mentioned are brilliant players along with 3/4 others who have not played county. They have been very successful this last number of years in reserve leagues and championships so I don't think they are too reliant on the old dogs. They aren't as far away as some may think and will be confident taking on Clontibret at the weekend. Clontibret will take nothing for granted here.

Was at both Senior quarter finals over the weekend. Both very different games.
Latton v Clontibret Played in blayney in awful weather. Wind and rain was very bad. Pitch in very bad looking condition. Big areas?holes of missing grass, no lines on the pitch. Hard to know how they actually get games. Much rather travel to Inniskeen or somewhere else. As for the football it wasn't much better. Very slow defensive game. Clontibret probably marginally the better team but Latton had their chances and could of got something from it, McGuigan and Lavelle were good for Clontibret, Gormley intercepted a lot of play also. Mulligan and Duffys good for Latton. Latton seemed to be missing a few (Coyle, McCabe, Connolly). Clontibret played around alot in their own half which could of cost them.
Scotstown v Aughnamullen Played on a super day, weather was brilliant and was in Clontibret (massive bonus) with a massive crowd and good atmosphere. Pitch freshly mowed probably Saturday and lined out. Place never fails to surprise me when attending games there. New boundary fence since I was last there which is brilliant for supporters, loads of volunteers parking cars, making tea and coffee, running the two shops, noticed they have a social club which opens also. Everyone seems to be rowing in the one direction in the club and makes going to games a pleasure. As for the game was a little exciting for 40 mins maybe. Aughnamullen stayed with them but could not get within touching distance. Aughnamullen dropped a lot of balls into Beggans hands too. Scotstown probably stuck in 3rd/4th gear so IMO they have more to offer. Aughnamullen looked very fit but I could not get over how cynical Scotstown were. Relentless fouling and no cards, maybe this is smart play by Scotstown but as a neutral was hard to watch. Maguire and Carey got away with several fouls one after another and nothing for it. It slowed Aughnamullen down and they got their defense set up. Refs need to be cuter to this, give 1/2 yellows and they will think twice about the fouling. Scotstown got a lot of easier free in the scoring zone also. Still they were the better team and deserve to be where they are.
The semi finals next Sunday should be two good games. Two very tough games to call. I see Sheehy and Boylan are reffing these two games. Surprised there wasn't some stunt pulled to get more Corduff sided refs. These two refs are good and fair IMO and glad they're getting the games. Really looking forward to these two games and they could literally go anyway.
Anyone make the Intermediate games? I believe Mooney was brilliant for Cremartin. Looking forward to seeing him against Carrcik and what kinda player he grows into in a few years. Shock result seeing Killanny beat the Faughs. Not disappointed though to be honest. Looks like Carricks to lose at this stage but who knows.

It was very close in the league game between the two teams. Both teams have youth and pace but Killanny maybe had bit more experience.
It will be interesting to see if Cremartin can bring momentum with them from the weekend or will the break suit the Harps. Big test of how far the Harps have come since last year (or even earlier this year when they were 2nd from bottom in the league). This one was very tight in the group round of games, 1-10 to 1-09 to Harps (at home).

What a result for Kilanny. Gives us all hope seeing a club with a small pick knock out one of the big towns. That's a good Kilanny team, backboned by a lot of the team that won the Minor Division 1 championship in 2017. They would be a very tricky draw for anybody, although I'd say Carrick will have too much for everyone else in Intermediate. As for Castleblayney, to say it is mind boggling how they are in this situation, is putting it lightly.
Latton just can't seem to win the big games up in Senior. I fancied them to beat Clontibret but they never really looked like beating them. They are just stuck in no man's land at the moment. They're way too good to be worrying about relegation, but they're always miles off winning a senior championship. They have a league final to look forward to now, which could at least end the year on a positive note for them.
I was actually impressed by Clontibret. I picked them to lose this game but truth be told, they looked pretty comfortable throughout. Killian Lavelle just looked a level above everyone else in the second half. Any time he ran at Latton he either scored, set up a score, or won a free. Ryan McGuigan and Brian Greenan very impressive also. Still no MP O'Dowd so he should be a big addition when he's back fully. Will they have enough to stop Inniskeen?

Replying To HB245: "Surely you realise I'm talking about Clontibret playing Inniskeen in the semi final…?" Don't think he picked up on that. Was wondering what he meant myself.
Inniskeen have been in some form this year. Have been very impressive, and they have beaten Clontibret twice this year. This could be used as motivation for Clontibret. They will have to improve from Saturday night in Blayney if they want to bring it to Inniskeen.
As for Scotstown v Corduff I really do not know what to expect here. Corduff play a very defensive game but Scotstown are probably the best team to rbeak this down. They have solid players all round so Corduff have a lot of danger men to watch as well as getting well set up. Really looking forward to Bantys approach, match ups, tactics.
Hopefully its a decent day weather wise and the 4 teams show up with their strongest hand. Should be a big crowd attending I would imagine.
