Was it not always thought that Monaghan stopped at 'Blayney?

if you look at those teams and look at previous minor,20s, 21s and county development squads of the last 10/15 years and see how many south monaghan lads have made it, it paints a grim picture. Theres teams in south monaghan with 3 or 4 teams with massive populations and players who have taken up spots on development squads for years and then didn't make it. Apart from Iniskeen in south monaghan who have taken through 3/4 players of immense county quality, the other teams seem to be a stagnant mix of decent but not county level players.

Just a question possibly off topic but I'm to lazy to look up the history books.
Who was the last club to win the Monaghan championship without having a player on the Monaghan panel on the same year.
Or even who was the last club to win it with only 1 player representing them at County level.

On this basis county final will be Scotstown (7 players on County) V Clontibret (5 players on County)
Latton (1 players on County)
Aughnamullen (1 player on County)
Inniskeen (1 player on County)
Corduff (0 players on County)

*Please note this is not a scientific study and is purely out of curiosity*

Not much different in the north these days though, apart from maybe Mohan, Bannigan and Woods has there been any young players that have come into the county set up and made any sort of meaningful impression over the last 3/4 years? The senior championship is still being dominated by the same big name players as it was 10 years ago. Scotstown still rely massively on the Hughes brothers, Clontibret still rely on mazy and have Vinny coming off the bench which is a damming indicator of where they're at, Owen Duffy is still the top target man for latton, Ballybay are something similar with Jaap. Corduff are a well drilled cohesive unit without any standout performers, Aughnamullan and Inniskeen are pushing on with talented young core but have no depth of talent, magheracloone are making up numbers, Donaghmoyne have a few underrated prospects but are struggling in senior so won't be looked at by the county.. it's hard to see looking at the top competition where the next group of top players will come from to take the burden off of what unfortunately looks to be a once (twice?) off generational group of footballers.

Admittedly Truagh, Emyvale and the Harps have massively underperformed in supplying the county team but now all of these clubs are creaking and getting old, with not a lot making a mark on the county scene just yet so the point stands, it'll be interesting over the next 3/4 years when the backbone of the county steps away who'll step up - and it'll have to be from outside of the north of the county because there's not a lot to pick from there as it stands"
Speaking of massively underperforming in supplying the county team.. Castleblayney and Carrick deserve a huge mention along with the Harps! The three biggest towns in Monaghan and in the last 15 years you could count on one hand how many county players they've combined to produce.
It's a miracle that we have been able to compete in Div 1 with these 3 towns not producing any talent. All plying their trade in intermediate now too. It's just inexcusable how they've been passed out by clubs like Corduff, Inniskeen, Magheracloone with a fraction of the catchment area.

Really? Mohan, O toole, Mc Philiphs, Lavelle, Niall Kearns, Gallagher,Lennon, Mulligan, Leonard, Loughran etc, these are all young players that have made it in some shape or form with the county. Apart from Jones, Bannigan and O hanlon, over the last 5 years there hasn't been any south monaghan youth coming through. I just find it an interesting topic, given the population of each areas, we should be getting far more quality from south monaghan.

Even looking at the minor team this year, our 5 all stars come from the Scotstown, Harps, Emyvale and Crematin clubs, surely this isn't a coincidence that the continued best players is north of the county ?

Scotstown still too reliant on the Hughes brothers? Kieran Hughes didn't play a second of championship football last year and they reached a county final at their leisure without him, only losing the final by 3 points. Both of the Hughes lads started for Monaghan against Dublin… so why on earth wouldn't Scotstown rely on guys that are good enough to start for the county? They've got 6 other county seniors apart from the Hughes', and about 100 other players to choose from! They'll be just fine when those two great servants call it a day.
As for your claim about Owen Duffy being Latton's main target man.. Aaron Mulligan has been by a mile their main scorer for about 4 years at this rate!

For me it is absolutely fact that South Monaghan has been overlooked. The stats are there in black and white.

I think at Senior Level for our County Team to be successful, you need more options across the county and not just a mass of players from Scotstown/Clontibret/Latton.

Anyway as we roll into the latter stages of the championship, my final pairings are Inniskeen v Scotstown. The battle of North v South and I have no doubt Inniskeen will bring a mass of support. They have shown great strides with a relatively young squad. It also seems this year that they are winning at every code and level including underage which is a telling sign of short and long term intent.

With the big pitch in Clones, Scotstown are hitting their stride and more than likely will breeze past them with bigger sights on Ulster. This is really where they should be focusing considering the adoption of Jack McCarron.

Would hardly call winning a quater final on penalties after the other team misses a open goal reaching a County final at your leisure.

Read what I said again and you'll see I'm referring to the current state of the club setup and its future impact on the county team.

The Hughes brothers are incredible, in my opinion Darren is the county's greatest ever player - just ahead of manzy. And you're right that scotstown have plenty of depth - but both of these lads are well into their 30's and still no one has come along to unseat them from being the backbone of the club or county team. Scotstown haven't produced a player with their size and ability in the what, 15 years since Darren came through - despite their player pool of "100 players". Scotstown are a far less formidable outfit without them and if Kieran was fit, they'd have won that final.

Regardless of scotstowns future I'm more worried by the county team and what is available out there to replace them across the county - especially when looking at the division 1 competition, which like it or not features the teams with the biggest quantity of good footballers. Ballybay, Clontibret, Latton are all still relying heavily on the old dogs - where's the youth? Look at what's happened magheracloone since the Freemans retired, or blayney since Strimmer buttsy and Hanratty left the county team.

Woods and Kearns walked away last year so you've only really got Mohan as a serviceable replacement for the physicality and skill the Hughes boys bring.

As for mulligan, again I'm referring to county level players. Duffy was a county standout player, mulligan hasn't made a dent at that level. And any time I've seen latton in knockout football, it's still all on Duffy - mulligan hasn't done it yet. We'll see how he gets on this weekend…
