Very disappointing performance by minors in Cusack Park this evening. Wicklow far better team and deserved to win by far more than the minimum margin. The lack of a game plan in attack was worrying, playing a third midfielder from the start allowed Wicklow to play a sweeper which reduced our attacking threat. Midfield well beaten throughout and Work rate overall was poor too, Wicklow far hungrier side, they could easily have scored five goals. Strange to see a sub for Westmeath taking frees early in second half, surely a starting player should be on frees. Miserable attendance from the home side too, Wicklow outnumbered our support.

Replying To Claretandblue:  "Playing a couple of challenge games having been out injured for six months is no preparation for inter county championship game. Ger's form in recent years has been decent but certainly not at the stellar heights of 3-4 years ago when he was our most crucial player. I'd hope he's introduced as a vital impact sub with a view to starting in our next game."
That would be the sensible approach

Wow that is a concern. David Giles could come in as he plays FB for Kinnegad ?
Charlie Drumm seemingly going well in training and might add some cover on the bench.
Ger Egan will probably not be named in starting 15 but he could be a late replacement which Jack is notorious for.
But I agree with previous posts, probably better he comes in as impact sub.
Longford currently 3/1 with bookies which is generous considering the leage match.

Westmeath need to be at it from the throw in tomorrow or else they are in trouble. In the league game Longford bullied them all over the park and got a grip on the game so our big players need to show up tomorrow.

Think it's highly insulting to the small crowd of supporters we have in both codes that no teams named for major championship fixtures at the weekend. County board need to flex muscles here and tell managers that we want teams named 48 hours prior to fixtures. Other counties do it and don't seem to suffer as a result. Supporters deserve better and it indicates a lack of respect towards us.

Why do you want the team named? In my opinion team should be named an hour before the game.

No point naming teams 2/3 days before games and then make 3/4 changes to the starting team.

Good win for the footballers. Took control early on and apart from a little blip near the end we deserved our win. Dominant all over the field. Half back line of Gonoud Wallace and I. Particular Harte outstanding. Ray Connellan played very well at midfield. We never looked in danger and can look forward to the semi final draw

Comfortable enough win but lots of room for improvement for the next day which will be a whole different ballgame as they say.
On the subject of not releasing the team in advance of the game, I agree that it's a joke and gives no consideration to those who follow the teams through thick and thin, it's same crack with the hurlers and shouldn't be acceptable!

Most counties can name teams 2-3 days in advance of game and somehow manage to get those same 15 onto the pitch for the game. Naming a team during the week creates interest and discussion which are important for supporters. It's not like we're dealing in state secrets. Childish carry on. No benefits.

Decent performance against a very average team. No idea why we let go the possibility of a comprehensive 15-16 win and instead led by 6 in injury time with Longford dominating. First half display hats to fault with Gardiner, Harte, Gonoud, Connellan and McCartan excellent and Lynam decent. O' Toole surely start the next day.

Am I correct in the following: If Westmeath lose in the Leinster semi final they play in Tailtann Cup the same as Longford. So unless they win the semi final and reach a provincial final the win over Longford is meaningless.

Same as any other year they would both go on to contest an all Ireland they have no chance of winning.

Is every win in a competition not meaningless therefore except for the ultimate winners? Ridiculous post

Louth beaten by sixteen points in Leinster quarter final. They stay in the hunt for Sam . If Westmeath dont win Leinster semi final they will be out of the championship before Clare, Louth and Tyrone . All lost provincial quarter finals. Its league that matters now , not championship.

They didn't get promoted whose fault is that. Their own. So they have to reach leinster final and rightly so
