Rachael should get it on basis of individual achievement but these often go to D4 favourites, and horse racing is in the black books.

Didn't some minority sport that no one plays or watches win it one year? Its for couch potatoes.

Jesus thats paranoid stuff.
Kellie Harrington with only our 11th ever gold medal in an olympics could easily get it based on individual achievement.
D4 favourites? Yet there isnt any of sports that youd class as d4 listed there....

what are you on about minority sport?

Blackmore or Harrington for me.

With full local bias I hope it's Harrington.

You fail to grasp the concept of "one year."

As in not this year, but another year.

It always fascinates me how RTE have lost sports broadcast rights left right and centre - but can continue with an award that doesn't mean an awful lot in the whole scheme of things.

100%, RTÉ should be wound down now as its not fit for purpose, I heard they might lose the rights Irelands fittest families next.

wound down. Why? we then would have virtually no irish programming on our screens. what benefit would losing rte bring?

How many times did a GAA person ever win the individual award?

Never mind the fact that sports like hockey and cricket and show jumping won sports teams awards for losing things.

I think Barney is having a bad day all right and that he's definitely not on the money here anyway.

Full list of all RTE Sports Personalities winners is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT%C3%89_Sports_Person_of_the_Year

I don't see anybody there from a minority sport "that no one plays or watches". Conor McGregor and MMA might be closest to it terms of people involved in the sport, but there are still huge numbers who watch it. I'm not one of them, but that's beside the point.

Think he's probably getting it mixed up with the BBC award. There was controversy about 15 or 20 years ago when Zara Phillips won it for Three Day Eventing.

To me the Awards are run by the PC Brigade in RTÉ. Leona Maguire is nominated but I ask is she in the top 50 golfers in Ireland. If she in not why is she nominated? I don't know the answer but are Lady professional golfers allowed play from a tee that sometimes can be up to 40 metres and more nearer the pin than allowed for top male golfers. Is that the reason why women have often very low scores? If they can achieve low scores playing off
the same tees as the men then there should be no reason for separate mans and ladies' competitions?

Katie Taylor has boasted in the past that she regularly fights males boxers in the gym and wins. I would argue it is a lot more difficult to win a men's World Boxing title and Katie Taylor doesn't have to fight any males in her division. No male boxer nominated and I wonder why? Bias?

We have calls for equality in Rugby, Soccer and Gaelic games and given. One could argue with confidence that teams from the men's 3rd and 4th divisions of these and more would be superior to the Ladies teams at the very top. I don't see any men from rugby, soccer or Gaelic Football being nominated for these awards.

To me, of the nominees only Rachael Blackmore deserves to be nominated. However, I would argue these RTÉ awards are not fit for purpose and I will happily give them a miss.

Watch nothing on rté except for the sport which I must say is very good imo.
I've always found their commitment to gaelic games to be very strong but many gaa people have a problem with the rté on that regard.
I've never really understood that.

RTE should not bee wound down. The GAA should be forced (Withdrawal of grants, etc.,) to commit to RTE and TG4 and not be selling it's soul to the likes of Sky whose analysists etc., are not a patch on RTE.

It's one of those things people just like to say all the time.
