the issue smaller clubs face are not going to be solved by the GAA. We can try and think of ways to help smaller clubs within the GAA but it's a structural problem in Ireland

See Murphy now says he made up his mind to retire after last game in Championship. Funny he did not announce it till recently. Me thinks new Manager told him who the boss is from now on and that he would play where he was told ie full forward and for the man who played where he wanted up to now would not accept that.

Especially as he trained with the squad the night before his announcement...

Murphy did not train with squad the night before announcement get your facts right. As for Jack the boy what a load of nonsense the man deserves more respect than that. Shame on you.

a lot of the quotes from Murphy around not being able to give 100% week in week out, not being of the mindset to "mind your body" early in the season to be fresh for the championship etc., that all makes a lot more sense to me than rumours swirling about management looking at him the wrong way and him throwing the toys out the pram

maybe he did do a bit of training and there was the realisation he just couldn't give 100%, maybe he wasn't too impressed with management or the whole process, who knows, but at this point would we not take the greatest player to ever play for Donegal at his word rather than doing this nod and wink stuff

Murphy owes us nothing that's for sure, I think everyone is just so disappointed he's gone and in my opinion he had a few more years left for us if he stayed at FF most of the time, he is still the best footballer in this county and likely will still be in 2 years time as well, there was never a need to slog him through the McKenna cup and every league game, he could have been rested and kept fresh for when we needed him most, and as I said before what a leader to have around the younger players, anytime Murphy was on the field we looked a different team, fellas need to step up now but it is a massive hole to fill for sure.
Not long to wait now till we are back in action, with Murphy on board and playing more attacking football confidence would have been a lot higher, as it is and with the rumours of recent weeks still knocking about then I'd have to say my confidence in us doing anything serious next season is low enough but hope springs eternal as the saying goes.

I think the point is, from Murphy's quotes anyway, that the "need to slog him" as you put it was coming from the man himself, he can't sit back, he has to go the whole hog. Now I know the retort will be that strong management will tell him what's what in terms of playing time, but I think from his personal POV if he can't even commit his body to going 100% *in training* from December/January, then he's right to hang up the boots at intercounty level. And that's what he has been saying, I saw him say to Alan Foley that he isn't somebody that could only train once a week early in the season and build himself, he'd have to be doing the full sessions plus gym otherwise he wouldn't feel right.

As I said that all makes more sense to me than Murphy having a tantrum about being told he's playing full forward.

I agree with you it's hard to be optimistic now and losing Murphy is a massive massive blow, but at the end of the day in my view we still have some of the most talented players in the country in the likes of Langan, Eoghan Bán, Ryan McHugh. Mogan, Jason McGee, Ciaran Thompson in my view is a rolls royce footballer as well. So there's plenty talent but as I said in an earlier post maybe now without Murphy to drive us, we will be that "nice footballers but not winners" county again.

I hope to god I'm wrong and I like Paddy Carr, he seems mad for Donegal football which is great to see, so let's see how we go now in the next few weeks.

I'm not sure the odd are out yet for next year's club championship but a bet on Glenswilly wouldn't be a bad bet. They will have Murphy all season so the team will improve with him there sure but as you can see they made the Minor final and won their u21 final so they have a great crop of players coming.

I stated on here a few years ago that their next championship would be an intermediate championship. Now I feel I wrong and they will have another senior title in the next few years.

Yeah themselves and Four Masters will surely be in the reckoning for senior honours in the not too distant future. Not all successful underage players go on to senior so it will be interesting to see how things go. I remember back in my underage days Four Masters were very dominant and had the likes of Lacey, Durcan and Dunnion. But from memory the best of the lot was a lad called Martin Gildea. He was lethal at full forward for them. Not sure what ever happened his football career, think he might have moved away down the country?

Big interview with Paul McGonigle in the Inishowen Independent apparently where he outlines some major problems for Donegal GAA which need addressing ASAP. Should be interesting reading.

An pretty remarkable article in the Inishowen Independent today by the defeated party in the chairman election - a case of sour grapes?

Read the paper this morning, doesn't come across as sour grapes. He said he wishes the new chairman well and that he hopes he is successful and can help improve the governance and transparency of our county board.

Yes, very positive. Paddy Carr quoted as saying all players from last year's panel are available part from Michael Murphy.
Also interesting that 2 of the 3 people on the interview committee are now on the backroom team. I would say the 3rd will not be that far away either.

Happy New Year folks!

Does anyone know what the plans are for the u21 championship to be finished off? I see MacCumhaills and Gaoth Dobhair won their quarter finals yesterday with the other quarter finalists playing tomorrow night. I'd imagine they'll try to wrap it up quickly after all the delays before Christmas? Plus I'm sure Paddy Carr has his eye on a good few lads that he'll want to involve in the McKenna Cup.

I think the Semi finals are down for Sat 7th and the final the following weekend.

Anyone have any idea of what the current squad looks like? Obviously the McKenna Cup squad and the League/Championshop squads will look a lot different. But it would be good to get an idea of who is involved currently.

You'd have an easier job finding out the North Korean State secrets.
