Replying To slasher9:  "great start to the year yesterday, very exciting stuff but early days. i would echo the concerns of the above posters but sadly im not surprised. this is commonplace across all clubs from people i speak to. young men just dont want to committ anymore. though from talking to a few yesterday i think some of the names mentioned are coming back just taking an extended break, rogers, brady, smyth all will be back for the league"
Smyth, Rodgers and Brady not yet yet playing

Good result last weekend after either a spirited fightback from us or a collapse from Louth. I still in the camp of giving O'Loughlin every chance and support. A lot of managers who were previously mentioned are on a merry go round, go in for 2 or 3 years, do ok, and leave again. I cant see massive risk in letting a guy in who is not on the merry go round, apart from a few players not opting to commit. Anyway, a positive result against Offaly on wed and it could set up a good game against Dublin.

You have to be in a position to merit getting an interview for a job let alone getting the job in the first place. O'Loughlin doesn't come with a pedigree that would put him in a position for the job let alone get it. Would a Longford man with a similar pedigree get the job?

At the end of the day, regardless of who is in charge, it'll come down to results. If the results aren't there then that'll decide what happens after championship. The O'Byrne Cup is glorified challenges. The results that matter will be the league and championship.

Div 3 is probably the weakeast its been in years. Tipperary and Cavan playing in Div 4 gives Longford a great chance.

That's what I mean, you have to be already on the merry go round. Why? Is only top former county players then allowed to join that group? A manager could be quite good, but just not have a good enough group of players at a club to win anything. Obviously the opposite is also true, a poor manager could find themselves with a great crop of players, win lots, and stay on the merry go round for years. A top man could easily end up in Div4 with us, so worst case scenario for O'Loughlin is we end up in Div4. Then he will either get a chance to lead us back out of it or he will be gone. I don't know if it will work out or not, but as you say, we will have a better picture by the end of the league. The point I make is that it is not a massive risk. Bigger risks to the future of our county and players come from the organisation at board level and the running of the association itself.

I agree with some of your points but a key point here is that O'Loughlin didnt have the pedigree to be considered for the job. Its not that he was coaching elsewhere and not getting the recognition, it was that he has done nothing to warrant consideration.

Liam Keenan was worth a punt as a Longford man with better pedigree.

In Pat Flanaghans case he might be on the "merry go round" as such but he has a great record. As is currently being proven with his continued success with Pearses but apparently its what you say you'll do regardless of the fact you've no evidence that you are capable of it rather than the proof of a good past record that matters.

I definetly don't think "putting" Longford in Div 4, if that turns out to be the case, will warrant a second year. Its a case of cashing in your chips at that stage and sorting out what should have been got right for this year.

I didn't see the full line out for the game until I read the Longford Leader tonight. According to them we had 14 debutants last Sunday. Was that right? They said 8 started and 6 more were brought on.

Joseph Hagan is corner forward with DCU, Cian Dooner is corner forward with TU Dublin and James Moran is a sub on the UCD side. Not aware of others.

An encouraging display night. Unlucky not to win or at least get a draw.
Positives the performance of the new comers. Joyce kicked two points when he came on.
After all the talk of retirement, Robbie is back and kicked a fine goal.
Good to see Barry O Farrell and Andrew Farrell back.
A lot of positives to take into league campaign.

McNamee scored 1-1 in injury time? Andrew Farrell went off injured? Heard it was a good game. Dubs on Saturday now?

Very exciting game, even if we did ultitmatly come out the wrong side of it.

Great to see some of the older heads back and a lot of the young lads are doing well.

Padraic Joyce is worth a start on Saturday as he had some impact when he came on. We should have a strong team going into the league now and thats what the O'Byrne Cup is all about.

The parking was a disaster last night though. Was there no where else with better parking they could have had the game?

What would we do to have a facility like that in Longford???

Its unreal facility and credit to Offaly. The parking doesn't make it suitable to host matches. In fairness I suppose it comes down to venues with lights. If the game was in Longford then I'm not sure if we would have a venue with good enough parking to hold a decent crowd.

Remember the celtic tiger days when they were going to put flood lights in Pearse Park and built a centre of excellence. Both were on the Longford Leader at the time. Its a pity they didn't happen. It'd be great facilities to have.

Padraig Joyce got the goal. Need to work on starting each half. Allowed Offaly 3 quick points at from the throw in at the start followed by 4 points unanswered in first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. Similar against Louth. Played some excellent fast football, with less of the recycling that we've become accustomed to

Is the deal that was done with Glennon's to use part of the carriglas estate for the center of excellence still on the table I wonder?

No, there'll never be a training centre for all teams. Plans to slowly upgrade Shroid for the underage teams and development squads. Moydow pitch also being looked at with a view to developing it for another squad.

For all the criticism the O'Byrne Cup gets, there were decent crowds at the 3 games. The Dub's that were at the game on Saturday are the true Dublin supporters, passionate and a bit of fun.

Dublin were far superior on Saturday but its all about the league now. Its important we get off to a good start against Limerick on Saturday week.
