Not to be overly concerned with County Board and Senior team matters it appears we're blooding an enthusiastic bunch of young aspirants on this very forum. Time will tell if the level of commitment proves too much…. Boxtyeater (Leitrim) - Posts: 713 - 23/10/2024 12:15:17 2576531 Link 0 |
Great to see Mikey involved in coaching. Was wondering what he had been up to since Boyzone finished up. Ronan Keating was the best singer, Keith Duffy just loved the limelight but I always felt Mikey Graham was a very underrated member of the band.

it think it has been apparent for some time that the youth of the county do not have the same grá for the county and the game that we had growing up, guess most of today's crop just were not born in 94 and do not know what real success looks like, Div4 final and TC quarter final appearances will be our lot unless something drastic happens in the next 10 years. I will not hold my breath

You'd work with what you got... this ain't the premiership. That being said Mickey would have been well looked after like the lads before him.

Far more distractions these days and the lure of working abroad and travelling may be stronger now. We were blessed also to have a particularly strong team at a time Connacht football was at a pretty bad level back then. One would say we should have won 2 or maybe 3 titles with that team, and maybe have made an AI final appearance, not saying that they'd have won that of course. boxtyburgerbuns (Leitrim) - Posts: 7 - 23/10/2024 14:13:20 2576558 Link 0 |
No harm but Leitrim were bet out the gate in the 94 All Ireland semi final. Connacht football was poor for sure back then and the Connacht final of 1994 was one of the poorest quality games of that year. Maybe ye had another Connacht final win in ye but definitely not an All Ireland final appearance. I was very happy to see Leitrim win in 1994 and wouldn't it be great to get all teams in Connacht up to the same level. Unfortunately I can't see it happen any time soon

You're right it's not the premiership it's mere a sign of the times even down to junior club level. You'll see managers promising promotion and whatnot and will stretch the board financially to achieve it with little care, yet when they are told no they down tools and walk away. As I said, he has no connection to Leitrim so why hang on unfortunately.

95 was definitely a missed chance for an AI appearance. Yes it would be great, unfortunately ourselves and yourselves and Sligo are well behind the big two boxtyburgerbuns (Leitrim) - Posts: 7 - 23/10/2024 15:06:45 2576571 Link 0 |
You'd wonder if an experienced manager like Declan Bonner would take the job considering we're facing a tough year in Division 3 with a weakened squad. I somehow doubt we'll get him on board. From what I've heard O'Hara isn't a frontrunner (he'd be my choice closely followed by Bonner) , Niall Carew is a journey man manager and Poacher while a well regarded coach has no experience of being the manager at inter county anyway. It's going to be tough getting the management team we'll need to compete in Division 3 at this late stage with the backdrop of players not being available . Not blaming players for living their lives and travelling while they can but it's such a pity we're losing so many players at the one time especially in a higher division when we need everyone committing , this is the reality of life for counties in the lower divisions , keeping a squad together for a few years which you need to do to progress is practically impossible now. That Leitrim team were very unfortunate that the back door wasn't available at the time. A team of fantastic footballers with great attitude. I don't think that being in the latter stages of the championship regularly was beyond them. The semi final in 94 was a huge occasion for them their first time in croker etc. They were unfortunate they didn't get a chance to build on that. O Hara isn't been considered for the job and I wouldn't go near Poacher.
