McKeon and Donie Smith had their moments but weren't as consistent as some previous championships. Daire Cregg had a good debut championship for Boyle. Some changes to the backroom is all I heard and Cunningham normally chooses people with previous experience for any of his management teams. Castlerea should be contenders. Great club team in the late 1960s/early 1970s with the likes of Harry Keegan and Mickey Freyne. Elphin are third in the senior roll of honour .Dominant in the 1950s. Probably haven't the numbers but Elphin is bigger than Ballyhale who are winning All Ireland club hurling titles. I'd say, numbers aside, that northern clubs could learn a lot from the underage structures in the Southern clubs.I'm a northern man but Clann, Brigid's and Pearses seem to be excellent at developing underage talent.

Find this a harsh statement. Take a look at the Demographics. This is not comparing like with like. The Northern Clubs are just about stringing a team together with many having to amalgamate to field teams. Pearses have hardly been breaking too many records at underage level over the past number of years.

Northern clubs don't have the numbers to consistently compete in underage competitions . Boyle bucking the trend with a good seam of players who contest the A U17 final v Ros Gaels on Sunday . Glaveys / Eire Og and Kilmore / Shannon Gaels have had amalgamated successes but the under age scene is dominated for the most part by Clan , Pearses , Brigids , St Dominics , Ros Gaels as they have the numbers and most can usually play a second team . Pearses looked a much better balanced team on Sunday . Considering the conditions were as bad as the Intermediate final the week before there was a huge gulf on class between the two finals . Cunningham would not have seen any new options on the Intermediate final imo . Pearses with some luck could have a tilt at Connacht . Clan disappointing especially around the middle . moros (Roscommon) - Posts: 1125 - 02/11/2021 17:54:30 2388209 Link 0 |
Be interesting to see who Cunningham adds to his backroom team. Think he should look outside the county for at least one of them anyway. I think Lennon should definitely get a proper go next year with Roscommon. His work rate and tackling is very good. Darcy looks in good form to

who said that? He turned us down last year when most taught we were a bit closer to the top than we are now. After regressing alarmingly in the 12 months since i couldn't see him been interested now when he wasn't 12 months ago.

Got a link to that or is all that talk just hearsay?

That's been going around the last few weeks but can't say if any truth in it or not. Personally I think it's not true unless he has left Monaghan and Roscommon have made him an offer he can't refuse. I would have thought Cunningham would have all this sorted by now and maybe he has. I also heard which I hope isn't true that one of the under 20s backroom team is going in with Cunningham. Again could be all nonsense. From speaking to a few lads on the under20 team they weren't overly impressed with the set up last year and getting to an all Ireland final was down to having a very good team and not so much on the management or coaching. So for the seniors Cunningham needs to get it right.

Liam Tully would be a great addition to Cunningham's backroom team. It's a pity he had to take the U20 job again for next year.

I think he's already left Monaghan, if Jack O'Connor didn't get the Kerry gig he was to be part of their management. Coaching and game plan was the prime reason why Roscommons U20s won the Connacht final against Mayo and All Ireland semi final Down. Would have won the final if they weren't so wasteful with the amount of goal scoring chances created. Yondu (UK) - Posts: 845 - 03/11/2021 17:04:37 2388309 Link 2 |
Think if you ask around to the right people you will be told different.

Yes it was a well coached U20 team, the way they created all those good goal scoring chances against a very good Offaly team came from the patterns of play worked on in training. Plenty of good players yes but let's not forget none of those players won a Connacht U17 title and they were developed to become a good U20 team Gaa_lover (USA) - Posts: 3581 - 03/11/2021 18:00:59 2388327 Link 1 |
That can't be right. I know there are rural parts of North Roscommon that will struggle with numbers but places like Castlerea and Strokestown have the population catchments to be a lot better than they are.I just doubt their structures are as good as the southern clubs. Castlerea should be a senior club.

Do you mean the U20 setup this year rather than last year. I thought the team seemed well coached in Castlebar where the tackling by our forwards was exemplary and was instrumental in our win over Mayo. It's interesting though if the players weren't that impressed with the management setup. A lot of the players are underage for U20 again next year and we should have a very strong U20 team again in 2022.

A lot of good players in Sheedy, McInerney and Cunningham. It was Benny O'Brien and his management team last game in charge, they were stepping down before this result just didn't get the send off they would have liked. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 4010 - 04/11/2021 16:14:48 2388411 Link 0 |
