It's a strange one. Last year it was voted at congress that in the event if a tie it would go down to a mini league between three or more teams. This would start with looking at the points i.e. in the case of galway mayo ros ending up in 5 , mayo would go through based in 3 points gained against other 2 as opposed to 2 points for ros and 1 for galway. But in typical GAA fashion they left it messy and gave an opt out for various competition organisers ( county boards , etc..) to decide to adopt new rule or retain old one. Hence the st Michael's debacle last year. Now I don't know what the norm for 2024 is, I know at start of national league it was announced that the nfl would use the old system. But unless some other rule was passed or the connacht council decided to state the use of the old rule for u20, then I am afraid that technically the new rule would be the default which could see galway missing out on top spot. Hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for that. Are you sure about Mayo being in final if they beat Sligo. What if Leitrim beat Ros. In that case I think it would come down to score difference in the Galway Mayo Leitrim round robin in which case Galway would qualify. But getting back to sceario where Mayo and Ros both win. Then its Mayo in final , Galway Ros in semi. I think this is a bit unfair. I have been a supporter of the new rule as it prevents a situation where a team gets an unfair advantage by hammering a team who are out of the competition in the last game. But in a group like the Connacht u20 that is certainlty not the case. Home advantage has been a huge factor. 8 games. 4 home wins, 4 draws , 0 away wins. Galway have played Roscommon and Mayo both away, whereas the other 2 had home adventage in at least 1 of the 2 games in consideration. I guess it would be worse if this rule eliminated a team ( which is also possible if the last 2 games both end in draws .. i.e. Leitrim and Ros in semis and Mayo out even though they have a superior score difference to Leitrim) anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 974 - 12/04/2024 09:07:38 2537454 Link 0 |
If Roscommon beat Leitrim that is but if Leitrim beat Roscommon then Galway will be straight into the final

Is Seán Bermingham still part of U20 panel? Came on in first couple of games but didn't see his name on the full panel that was published prior to Roscommon game. Was training with senior panel for a while last season. gaillimhboy (Galway) - Posts: 360 - 12/04/2024 10:22:09 2537477 Link 0 |
Minors out tonight in first round against Sligo. Haven't seen full squad but I assume we will see a few of the lads from that very strong Claregalway team that won the All ireland feile two years ago. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 828 - 12/04/2024 10:35:06 2537481 Link 0 |

That correct if Leitrim win. Galway into the final with this scoring difference. +5 Galway -1 Mayo -4 Leitrim Interesting that no side has won away yet. Last year Sligo won Connacht by beating Roscommon,Galway and Mayo away. The semi final in a few weeks to played in a neutral venue whats the award for finishing 2nd in the group? would make more sense if that team got a home match. I see the captain Daniel Hughes isn't named. Presume he is injured?

Galway minors very poor in the first half against Sligo. Down by 2 points despite having a strong wind behind them. Galway with loads of possession but 9 wides. Sligo with a blanket defence out but it's working very well in the wet conditions. Getting turnovers and forcing Galway into bad shots. Sligo look better coached. So far anyway. Apparently the seniors played a challenge against Kerry last weekend. Shane Walsh was involved. gaillimhboy (Galway) - Posts: 360 - 16/04/2024 08:21:30 2538233 Link 0 |
A bad night for football. I was at it, dominated for most of the game but couldn't make it count on the scoreboard. They were very good in the 2nd half against the elements and the draw was the least they deserved, some very good performances against a bigger side. Both Walsh and Comer back this weekend unless a last minute hitch...

Corofin's Killian Joyce looks a super player in fairness. Not sure many other Galway players stood out really. Tough conditions though with the gale of wind and Sligo defending with everyone behind the ball. Mayo look like they have a very good minor side this year. They seem to be warm favourites for Connacht at the very least. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2341 - 16/04/2024 11:36:50 2538308 Link 0 |
Will the Connacht Council make Sligo change their jersey for this game? We had to use our alternative jersey for last year's Connacht final. GDL (Galway) - Posts: 779 - 16/04/2024 21:28:47 2538434 Link 0 |
He looks like a baller alright and was always looking for the ball, he kicked a brilliant score from the terrace side before half time with his left and kicked the equaliser on the stand side with his right at the end. I thought Proulax was brilliant at centre back and the two wing backs worked very hard, another positive was Charlie Killeen, he is a big mobile unit and it is great to see a player coming through from Ballinasloe GAA.
