Dubs V Mayo

Replying To Gleebo:  "Yes, because as you've ignored from the previous post, Mayo is one of the furthest counties away from Dublin and a large number of our players have to commute to training and matches from there. It's not like Galway where your entire panel resides locally, the mileage and other costs build up very quickly. It's an overhead that the more urbanized counties don't have for the most part.

The long journeys through the qualifiers in recent years, having to arrange accommodation, food etc. for 30-40 people at the height of the summer tourist season wouldn't have helped much either. It is what it is.

Personally I'd prefer if the spiralling costs of running a county set-up were reined in by the GAA at central level, but this would probably involve getting rid of the qualifier system, super eights, a lot of the backroom staff that county setups usually have etc. and I can see vested interests objecting to that.

As for the rest...zzzz."
I'll tell you another county that's far away from Dublin; Kerry. I suppose Kerry lads don't go to Dublin for work at all do they? It's nearly as daft an excuse as the curse!

No worthwhile piece of silverware there? Your pathetic lad and not a true Gael. If all we measure success by is senior all Ireland's then 99% of us are utter failures."
My point is that I regularly hear Mayo fans say Keegan is the greatest defender of all time. This rubbish makes him soft. Michael Donnellan said in 98 he was regularly told he'd never be as good as his Dad or his Grandad. That drove him on to match them and to win the biggest prize. I guess it's the way of the world now to patronise people with false praise. I don't think that would have helped Donnellan and it's not helping Keegan either.

Replying To Mailman98:  "Interesting you mention Patrick Horgan, like Keegan an above average player, but also like Keegan missing that ingredient that takes him and his team to the next level. Last Sunday when it was there for him to put kilkenny away in the last minute he bottled a 65. It reminded me of Keegan dropping one nicely into Cluxtons hands in an all ireland semi that would have put Mayo 5 up or his black card in the 2016 final. Bad shots and/or bad decisions under pressure. Keegans probably cost Mayo at least one all Ireland. He was even more idolised in Mayo after each one of those mistakes. Go figure!"
You are entitled to your opinion Mailman but IMO you are being very harsh. Everyone agrees that Dublin were a fantastic team (probably the greatest of all) but maybe brought them deep into the trenches on more than one occasion. Lee Keegan was a great player for them. Likewise Patrick Horgan. Lots of players miss frees. Your post smells of bitterness.

In fairness there was a few Galway lads called it out too.

They actually don't. Isn't it widely known they're almost all based in Kerry?

Quick Google and there's actually a joe.ie article on this exact topic.

Tbh don't know why I'm replying to you. You're one of the biggest WUMs on this forum in a while.

#Only for 'home team' advantage and refeering decisions(2 penalties etc.) Mayo would be planning to face off with Meath

Oisin Mullins apparently a major injury concern and Padraig O'Hora out for Saturday.

The Kerry lads mostly live there or in Cork. They mostly don't go to Dublin to attend third level either.

I'm pretty sure that 20+ of their panel aren't based in Dublin, but I'm sure some of their posters will correct me if I'm wrong.

Just admit to your unhealthy obsession with your neighbours and move on.

Horgan and Keegan have a long way to go before they'll be missing the amount of ingredients you clearly are.

If The Dubs don't beat Mayo by doubles cores with C O Connor and now O Mullen and P Hora missing through injury then Kerry will win Sam with ease.

With Keegan barely able to lift one arm above his head and Oisin Mullins out with a torn quad apparently, and now O'Hora possibly out. Sure that's 3 of the beat defenders in the game. That's a serious blow to Mayo's chances

Who are these people you're talking to? I haven't met a Mayo supporter yet who has said Keegan is the greatest defender ever.

What I will say is that over the years, more often than not Keegan has delivered in big games, whether it was through smashing in goals in the All-Ireland finals in 2016 and 2017 or by nullifying the opposition's most dangerous forward. It's not his fault that he hasn't won a senior All-Ireland.

As for this "your father this, your grandfather that" nonsense, Keegan's dad comes from England, so that's not likely to have helped him much in a GAA context.

How about we discuss the game to come on Saturday, given the thread title?

I'd admit it if your arguments made any sense. Why is Cork good enough for Kerry players to work or go to college in but Galway is not good enough for the Mayo lads? Notions!

If its true then Horans training methods have got to be questioned.

Cant be having A v B games if players are going out hurting each other

3rd year in a row now where they are facing the Dubs having collected self sustained injuries in the week leading up to the game..
Its ******** infuriating.

It's a quad injury Mullin got. Definitely not a result of players hurting each other in training. There were no new injuries in the lead up to last year's final, although Paddy Durcan got injured in the first half.

Lots of players do indeed miss frees and lots of players drop balls into goalkeepers arms too. I'm very well aware of that and have recent evidence of it with Galway players, however, I am only aware of one player regularly labelled as the greatest of all time, in his position, by his fans who has done it on more than one occasion when the stakes were highest and that's Keegan. I'm not saying he's not a very good player but he's nowhere near as good as he's made out to be in Mayo and a dose of reality from them towards him would do him no harm at all.

You're taking the point too specifically. Nobody is going to tell Keegan he's not as good as his Dad but they could tell him he's not as good as the man who wore the 5 Jersey in 1951 and it might get his head out of the clouds for a while.
