Dickie with the greatest of respect at that time it wouldn't have been a huge shock. The Meath hurling team at that time were very strong and very competitive and would've been in the top 10-12 teams in the country. without going looking exactly, Meath had a very decent team back around then, and while never pushed on too further did take a few scalps and were hard to beat if you look up the National League results...I do remember ok Meath being top...our own Michael Duignan managed Meath at one time from memory...

Mr Duignan did indeed. An absolute gentleman. Cillian Farrell from around Edenderry managed Meath twice too.

In 1993, Down beat Kilkenny in Nowlan park and finished second in division 1A ahead of Kilkenny, Limerick and Offaly. yes a great decade Gaillimh abu.6 different counties won the hurling and 7 different counties won the football.A golden decade for sure.

Cork won it in 1990 Down in 91 and 94 Donegal 92 Derry 93 dubs 95 Meath 96 and 99, Kerry 97, Galway 98.

Actually, in the 1910's, you had 8 different counties winning the AI hurling final, and Kilkenny still managed to do 3-in-a-row. I was on the phone to an old Limerick man who has just turned 80, to wish him Happy Easter, and he was able to tell me that. I checked it online, and he's right.

Down actually had a good side back then, I dont want to go into names as I will probably be a few years out..Ime thinking Noel Sands maybe and a few others, some lethal free takers down had around that time...Ulster hurling wasnt too bad at that time, Antrim, Down and Derry were always worthy of respect in League especially and put in decent performances in Croke park too and fell short unluckily on some occasions..

there were a few shocks in the Centenary Cup competition in 1984 and again in the Ford Cup the following year...Roscommon knocking out Wexford in hurling..is a big one...Monaghan reaching the final must have taken a few scalps along the way in 1984...a year before they won the league....
