Clann Eireann cruised to a 1-23 to 0-13 victory over Carrickcuppen in their Armagh senior football championship opener in Carrickcruppen last night.

Odhrán McCafferty’s goal after 22 seconds set the tone for the 2024 champions as they went on to dominate large portions of the first-half against the hosts and take in a 1-13 to 0-6 lead at the break.

Armagh ace Conor Turbitt, who finished with a personal tally of 0-13, kept the scoreboard ticking over the visitors in the second-half, with Blaine Hughes (0-5) finishing as Carrickcuppen’s top scorer in their 13-point defeat.

Meanwhile, Maghery earned a hard-fought win away to Armagh Harps to get their Gerry Fagan Cup bid up and running.

It finished 2-14 to 1-15 at Abbey Park, where a two-pointer from teenager Jonah Feeney proved the difference between the sides in the end.

Feeney netted an early goal for the visitors and Brendan Haveron would another ahead of the Harps fighting back to trim their deficit to two (2-6 to 0-10) by half-time.

Oisin McGurgan and Tom O’Kane sent over points early in the restart that levelled the tie before Harps hit the front with a James McCoy.

Winners of this competition in 2020, Maghery tightened up at the back in the closing quarter and, in the end, it was Feeney’s effort from distance which saw them taking both points.

The first-round games in the Orchard County resume on Saturday afternoon with six more games on the schedule over the next two days.
