Roscommon are Allianz Football League Division 2 champions after edging out Galway by 1-20 to 0-22 in a cracking final at Croke Park this afternoon.

Substitute Diarmuid Murtagh rifled in what proved to be the winning goal as the Rossies collected their third Division 2 crown in five years at their provincial rivals’ expense.

The sides couldn’t be separated at the end of the first-half, going in level on 0-9 apiece, with Paul Conroy particularly outstanding for Galway during the opening period as he contributed 0-5 from play.

The Tribesmen men fell five behind after a sluggish restart that saw Ciaráin Murtagh and Donie Smith leading the way for the would-be winners in attack and putting them 0-17 to 0-12 in front by the 53rd minute.

Galway boss Padraic Joyce introduced Shane Walsh to the fray soon afterwards and they’d eventually get themselves back level before Damien Comer shot them 0-18 to 0-17 ahead with six minutes of regulation remaining.

Roscommon took back the lead via points from brothers Ciaráin and Diarmuid Murtagh prior to Rob Finnerty levelling matters.

Six minutes of added time were signalled and it was Diarmuid Murtagh that bored through in the 71st minute to land the hammer blow for Anthony Cunningham’s men, as Galway saw a late goal effort of their own go over the bar instead of under.
