I don't even want to think about it again. Your always hopeful but you never really believe you are going to get over the line as a Wexford fan. When John McGrath got sent off and Chin got his goal to put us 5 up, I let myself believe we were going to win. Then like usual, at least in my lifetime of following Wexford, I was brought crashing back down to reality. I've spent most of my life either watching Kilkenny beat the ***** out of us or getting too hopeful about what turns out to be a false dawn. Now that we're coming towards the twilight of the careers of our mini golden generation, it stings even more we didn't get over the line in 2019. I don't think we'll get another chance for a long time to come, not until another crop of exceptional players comes along. Fulgrim (Wexford) - Posts: 270 - 29/02/2024 09:47:40 2528893 Link 0 |
The only game I can think of that comes close in comparison is the Clare game in Thurles 2 years ago, granted injuries put a huge dent in our chances that game, but I think we were 5 points up with about 15 mins to go? Both were like watching a crash in slow motion. That's one voodoo I really want to see us get over - winning an All Ireland Quarter Final, as much as I'd like a Leinster final win to go straight to a Semi OpenStandWall (Wexford) - Posts: 287 - 29/02/2024 10:27:01 2528901 Link 0 |
Same as that. We were in the canal end and got a great view of the goal. Looked at the kids alongside me saying we're on our way to the all Ireland final. Whistle blowing at the end was just surreal. I remember thinking there must be a mistake and it can't end like that. In 13 when Mac got the big scores at minor and came on against Clare and scored nearly straight away I remember thinking we've a new Tony Doran here. Ultimately he'll probably finish with just the one Leinster. It's hard to swallow at times. All my time following Wexford has been serious highs and lows from game to game bar that glorious summer 28 years ago. We're all sick of talking about it but how can we not when success is so rare for a passionate people. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3885 - 29/02/2024 11:12:44 2528907 Link 0 |
Yep, have supported them all my life, my father was a Wexford man and we travelled the country with him to games. We were at the Tipp semi final and like you we thought we had it, and that team had no fear of Kilkenny so thought it might just be our year if they won that day. Like you, all I remember is KK beating the ***** out of us most time with the odd Leinster and who could forget 1996. The saying, it's the hope that kills you, was invented by a Wexford supporter I think. Inaroundthehouse (Wicklow) - Posts: 14 - 29/02/2024 12:03:52 2528925 Link 0 |
Yes Doyler it is sickening when we think of what might have been. That unforgettable semi final against Tipperary is the standout. However we must move on and try to be optimistic for the future. I believe there are green shoots appearing with our present crop. Lads like Corey Byrne Dunbar, Cian Byrne, Tucker Kinsella, Conor Hearne, Seamus Casey, Conor Foley, Cian Molloy, Eoin Ryan, those plus the established players such as Jippo, Mac,Rory, Foley ( when he recovers from injury ) Dee, Mogie and Mathew are not pensionable just yet. If we can build on our dominance over Kilkenny and been very competitive against Clare last week we may well be turning the corner. However we must be consistent throughout the remainder of the season. It would be great to beat Waterford and Cork or at least one of them. Of course the main focus will be in the round Robin. They will be all tough but if we can be almost injury free and play with passion and intensity like in the games to date then perhaps we can take a few big scalps along the way. I am looking forward with huge interest as we head into the business end of things. As a long suffering Wexford supporter I am more optimistic this year than the last few years under previous management. Keith seems to be the right man to get us moving in the right direction. We need a golden generation for sure. But everyone in the county can do their bit to try to ensure another one comes, or can be built up over a few years as happened in the late 40s early 50s. Especially parents. Get involved with their local club. Do coaching courses so that clubs can have 2 training sessions a week and young lads get more exposure to hurling. And football. And the county have enough volunteers to run countywide winter training programmes. Plenty lads moaning about our lack of success but what I've discovered over the last 4 years is that while there are great people volunteering their time to try to improve things these people are in a tiny minority compared to parents who sit in their cars on their phones while their kids are at a training session, or worse again just drop the kids off and use their team as some sort of free babysitting service.

The Tipp game was the biggest disappointment in my time following wexford. For someone too young to remember 96 I thought it was our time and it was a bitter pill to swallow. But time moves on that was 5 years ago now. In reality we are way off challenging for an All Ireland at the moment but with the current blend of youth and experience and positive vibes coming from the camp im hoping we can really have some great days out this year.

What I will say on that is these things can turn very quickly. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3885 - 29/02/2024 16:04:59 2528954 Link 0 |
I've often said the same. Biggest disappointment in my sporting life by far. I was gutted for the rugby team at this world cup but 2019 AI semi final is something I don't think I'll ever forget.

That's very true. In fairness nearly all the parents with the harriers get involved and the club ethos is fantastic. We're producing very very good teenagers but really struggle to keep them. The current senior team is a welcome exception though. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3885 - 29/02/2024 19:03:48 2528973 Link 0 |
That Cork team never recovered either from throwing away a big lead against Limerick the previous year. Those kind of defeats leave a lasting scar. That was a Tipp team on its last legs that beat us too, they have been poor since. Fanning launching a series of puckouts deep into the Tipp half when he had a spare man in front of him.... Anyway we move on! Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 444 - 29/02/2024 21:59:42 2528992 Link 0 |
Same as. Im a Gaa man first but the rugby world cup exit was devastating for any sports fan across the country. Im hopeful we'll have a few good days following Wexford this year and with a bit of luck some silverware

How many of u17 squad from 2019 leinster champioshop winning panel are involved with seniors at present . Formertownie (Wexford) - Posts: 394 - 01/03/2024 10:04:30 2529026 Link 0 |
Cian Molloy, Richie Lawlor, Cian Byrne, Conor Foley, are currently in the Senior squad, while Cian Byrne gk, Kyle Scallan, AJ Redmond, Dylan Whelan, and I think Justin Moran were in it earlier in the season. Josh Shiel and Oisin Pepper previously involved also. Tucker might have been in the 2019 minor extended panel also but I'm not sure

Good question, and I've dug out the programme from that Leinster Final day to try answer it. Of the 1 to 15 for the Leinster Final, just two are currently with the county seniors - Cian Molloy and Richie Lawlor. Two of the subs are with the seniors now as well - Conor Foley and Cian Byrne (Fethard). Others in that 2019 matchday squad who've been there or thereabouts with the seniors in recent years include Cian Byrne (Rosslare), Kyle Scallan, Josh Sheil, and Oisin Pepper. Ah. Seems like there were plenty of people lining up to answer that one! Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 3010 - 01/03/2024 11:41:10 2529041 Link 0 |
A couple of big days out would he great. I'm a bit worried as it seems all our higher scoring forwards have injury problems especially Chin and ROC. But we are in much better place going forward than last year. Loads of the team just weren't fit but this year we have found a few lads that can do a job if key players are out and some of em might even take the place of a big name or two. So that's progress I suppose WEXILE (Wexford) - Posts: 438 - 01/03/2024 12:02:55 2529048 Link 0 |
It was our only Leinster minor win in my adult lifetime! And I'm 53 now!
