And Musk running around on stage like a clown now has an office in the White House. He's South African though so it's ok. As you say it would be a pure comedy if it was not so serious.

Where did you hear that they're taking 2 weeks off? Do you want them to run their respective departments and actually get stuff done or do you want them to sit in the Dail and put up with the BS that we saw today from some opposition TDs? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5222 - 22/01/2025 17:19:28 2587000 Link 0 |
Maybe if they weren't trying to hoodwink the same opposition today's scenes could have been avoided. In what democratic world do you think it's OK for TDs in and supporting government to sit on the opposition benches. They can't have it both ways. Maybe it's the norm in NK but not here. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1079 - 22/01/2025 18:24:34 2587021 Link 0 |
They are taking a 2 week break… and what went on today was brought totally on by themselves.. this government are already an absolute joke… with a gangster backing them and wanting to be in opposition as well…

The "proud boys" and "oath keepers" pardoned and out of jail. The police union (who backed Trump) are not happy….day 2…you ain't seen nothing yet. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11436 - 22/01/2025 23:40:42 2587057 Link 0 |
Well the same group of independents were in opposition in the last Dail and voted with the government. In the previous Dail, FF voted with FG in the C&S agreement having agreed the programme for government with them. So it's not exactly out of the ordinary. If anything, having a group in opposition who essentially have the power to bring down the government ensures more accountability for said government. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5222 - 23/01/2025 02:25:52 2587069 Link 0 |
They are not sitting in the Dail for 2 weeks. Instead, they are getting started on running their departments and getting actual work started. The only caveat is that now that is delayed by a day as some public representatives could not show common decency and decorum in the national parliament and shouted down the ceann camhairle any time she spoke. Is that democracy at work?? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5222 - 23/01/2025 02:28:46 2587070 Link 0 |
Did FF take their place on the opposition benches in the last Dail? No. Good to see the CC make a common sense decision this morning. A pity it wasn't 24 hours earlier. Fair play to the ACTUAL opposition for standing their ground. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1079 - 23/01/2025 09:08:59 2587079 Link 0 |
The opposition TD's were also democratically elected and were not going to allow themselves be walked on by FG/FF… They were right to cause havoc and it will probably result in the first climb down and failure of this numpty dumpty government…

Yes, opposing blatantly undemocratic processes in the strongest terms possible is in fact democracy

In fairness, the transfer of power can be very fraught and difficult. Remember what happened in the United States with the transfer of power from Trump to Biden in 2020/2021. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13781 - 23/01/2025 12:27:03 2587116 Link 2 |

I'm staying neutral on this but last evenings footage on tv reminded me of the Jan 6th scenes in 2021 - without the violence.

I never said they did in the last Dail - I said the one previous to the last one (2016-2020). They were leading the opposition while voting with the government (FG minority) having agreed the programme for government with them.

With respect, it's not remotely comparable

That's my point here. It's still unclear whether our constitution allows for those independent TDs to sit in opposition and speak. My understanding is that they are technically allowed to do so under the constitution. However, the opposition parties didn't like this and so the incoming government agreed that this issue would be looked at, with legal advice sought, over the next 2 weeks (before the Dail sits again). All parties entered the chamber yesterday to nominate a Taoiseach having agreed to the above. Upon entering, the government chief whip noticed that the SF leader was in conversation with the clerk of the Dail and it subsequently unfolded that some opposition TDs has reneged on the agreed process and instead used the day to present the people of Ireland with the circus we saw yesterday. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5222 - 23/01/2025 13:48:18 2587135 Link 0 |
FF/FG are not trying to walk on anyone. They have not asked that Lowry et al get opposition speaking time. It's the independents themselves who have asked for this.

Hardly blatantly undemocratic when our constitution seems to allow for it. . What would you rather. . .and army council who calls the shots behind balaclavas? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5222 - 23/01/2025 13:51:57 2587137 Link 0 |
