It was indeed . I actually knew the ref involved. He was from a neighbouring club. Decent enough ref but obviously all didn't agree. He wasn't so much physically assaulted, as a verbal one and he overbalanced . Papers made much of it. No, nobody wants to go back there. Although from reading reports from all over the country, many referees have had even rougher confrontations than this. No one county has a monopoly of over eager supporters, so stones and glasshouses comes to mind when reading a previous post or two.

No problem Flaker. Mine re the car boot was meant to be in jest as well. Poor old refs were getting a bit of a hiding on here

Agree to an extent. They are professional refs and can get off social media if they think that's an issue. However the problem is not all refs are professional and they like the GAA have to rely on amateurs to turn up and do a job that fewer and fewer want to do. Neither does that excuse the arrogance of some refs who refuse to keep fit, keeping up with the learning of the rules or allowing the personal views to influence how they ref games. Its a difficult one to solve. The rules don't help either and its certainly not being made any easier for the foot soldier referees in that respect. Taken in isolation the Hansen thing is hard to justify based on what he said but in a wider context I think it is.

I agree when you are talking about GAA refs etc. But I am talking about this rugby ref and the Hansen incident specifically. Blown out of all proportion.

On what basis is it acceptable for an international player earning circa €300-400,000 per year to publicly lambast a referee in front of assembled media? Can you imagine the outcry if a pundit lashed a player's performance to that extent? Just because they're paid doesn't excuse it, David Walsh in yesterday's Sunday Times tells it as it is.

What has anyone salary got to do with it? Would it be ok if on a smaller contract A lot of it is from rugby notions too like his teammates have to do a course too. I wonder if it's in the same place as they do tackling school jm25 (Galway) - Posts: 1308 - 13/01/2025 16:42:52 2585744 Link 0 |
Fully agree, if it was a SA or English player we would be calling it out. Some seem to think because he's from a smaller club ( no offence to Connacht) and viewed as a decent lad that its ok. I'm sure he meant no harm but players have to realise comment's like this feed the online clown's. Payment is not an excuse. Mack will need to up his media work before he join's Leinster.

Hansen didn't lambast the referee tho. He mentioned 2 incidents in the Leinster game and compared the time given by the ref/TMO to each one. He then went on to claim that Connacht never get the calls (so aiming criticism at all referees here). I don't think he went over the top in what he specifically said about any one particular referee. And I don't believe he'd have been banned if he hadn't mentioned the trend he feels has emerged. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5215 - 13/01/2025 19:07:34 2585757 Link 0 |
You should know at this stage over all sports Cavanman47 that referees are never wrong and regardless of what mess they make of a game they are never questioned…. do that and you will get a fine or suspension or both…. Question a ref in the GAA now and he will pick up the ball ( one of the great new rules ) and run away with it….!!!!!

Judging by the shouts at the ref from players and spectators at any game I've ever been at, there will be an awful lot of 21 yard frees for a while.
