Donegal GAA thread

Tyrone's big win against Clare means it's winner takes all in 2 weeks time to see who tops the group. Their win today puts them on +7 score difference (if my counting is right). We are on +5 so if both ourselves and tyrone win we need to better their result by 3 points to top the group

We just need to focus on beating Clare and will see what happens after that

You can put Galway in that bracket with Donegal, Derry, Tyrone and Armagh. They've done nothing more than Donegal have, if winning your province and beating Derry is a barometer.

Disappointing result yesterday but not the be all. Unfortunately things are out of our hands now and comparing our performances with 2 weeks to spare and 1 weeks preparation would suggest finishing top is vital with an eye on getting to a semi final. Better to lose now but leaves things tricky. Looking at the highlights it seemed we dominated much of the play but goals cost us with 2 been very cheap. The turnovers in the lead up looked like a lack of concentration which can be attributed to not being fully there mentally. Hopefully now it'll deflated a bit of the hype which is no bad thing and we turn up fully focused for Clare. We need to be more ruthless when it comes to taking goal chances. They've been there but we've not been proficient enough. I doubt Jimmy will let us conceded 3 goals again which done us yesterday. I hope those who travelled enjoyed Cork City. It's a great city to go out in.

Keep the Dubs out of this conversation please because it concerns at comparison of the supposedly 'futile' Munster football championship versus the 'great' (erstwhile) Ulster championship.

I can see Tyrone draw with Cork in the final round, which will suit both of those sides. Therefore, that deems a straight shootout between Donegal versus Clare in your next game at a neutral venue. I've a tasty hunch that Clare will spring a surprise...Bye, bye, Jim!

Agree with you entirely. This "power rankings" business is so juvenile so I'll leave that to the children. Dublin for so many reasons both on and off the pitch are ahead of everyone. Kerry are then probably next best placed for a crack at Sam but take a couple of key players out and they're right back in the chasing pack. I see everyone's new favourite "third place in the power rankings" team were fortunate to get past Westmeath today. Hopefully another big crowd out to support the lads now in two weeks again and we win well with other results going our way.

Kerry won't be far weren't in final last year dubs beat them by 2 73rd minute and 74th kerry are clear second until beaten.

And there's no shame dubs have had best team on history how many all irelands have ye vs kerry and Kerry are perennial challengers. At least Kerry get to croker regularly in fairness.

I would definitely say that finishing top will make of break our season going forward. The extra break would definitely help our team and it's definitely an advantage going straight into a quarter final.
But whatever happens, I think it's been good progress, and McGuinness has definitely improved every player, we can't expect to much considering the time he has been in charge. I'd be over the moon to get to a semi final to test ourselves against one of the big teams.
A semi or quarter this season and build on it next season.
Is there an all Ireland in us, it all depends on the draw and how fresh we are in the latter stages. But I do believe we have as good a footballers as anyone

Just looking back at highlights and that over carry call was very harsh, if he's going to call that he'd need to call every time a player solos up the field. Careless enough turnovers for first and third cork goals not ideal. Even for the last one there was a dirty ball to win and it's something that's been noticeable this year that they aren't great at winning dirty ball on the ground.
Though with all the mistakes and goals they kept going and despite been really tired and nearly got there. And funnily enough it really is do or die in the next game. Lose and unlikely we go through. Win and anything is possible. I don't agree with the system as it stands but it does make the last set of fixtures very interesting,

A lot of bickering going on here today. Very childish I must say. If poor rorysboys was at it he would be called every name going.. a bit of kop on wudnt go amiss. We all want Donegal to do well.

That was a long long journey home with silence in the car most of the way - bitter disappointment after been on such a high the previous few months.

Did anyone get the turnover count ? I haven't seen us turned over that much in a long long time - most of cork scores came from that. Having not conceded a goal in championship to cough up 3 yesterday was very very poor.

To the lads shipping digs at Monaghan I wouldn't be as quick to do so - remember 2013/15 and we have a poor record against them - they also went deeper in the championship last year than we have been in 10 years.

No point crying about the fixture/turnaround time / trip etc - we were well beaten by the hungrier more disciplined better team - simple as that.

I still think we are in a great place with the messiah from glenties / fintown steering the ship - I wouldn't swap him for anyone. We will learn from it re-group and most likely tank Clare and still top the group.

No need for panic even though sport has a horrible habit of kicking u in the stones when u least expect it…..

I think the amount of high intensity games we played recently caught up with us on a hot day after along trip to the other end of the country but taking nothing away from Corks victory which they fully deserved.
I just feel sorry for all the little children that have been flocking after Jim but it is a good life lesson for them and a good time to suffer this defeat because we have the chance to get back on track straight away now.
Jim has taken us from nowhere again to be Ulster Champions in a very short window of time and we have a lot to contribute to the All Ireland series still I have no doubt.
I don't know a lot about Clare and we'll see how Tyrone fair today but I think with time to prepare and fellas wanting to put things right after yesterday we'll will be well ready to take them on.
I'd pay no attention to any trolls on here or attack whatever county they claim to be from on an anonymous forum, what they are saying says more about them than anything else, 'haters are gonna hate' lol."
We did benefit from a 2 week rest & having beaten Clare already the pressure was off us in many respects.
Like previously mentioned twas a good time for Jim & co to lose, also Donegal had goal chances which were not developed completely or snatched at at times.
So in short the Donegal story is not over for 2024.

Went down to the game yesterday and was obviously disappointed with the result. While the turnovers hurt us, I think long term what I would be most worried about is the lack of variation in the attack. 90% of our attacks were on short hand passes with players running lines off it. No target man stuff and I don't think there was a single mark in the game. As much as I hate the attacking mark I think that game was crying out for it with the way Cork were set up. We have a lot of good long range shooters but we clearly weren't looking for short kick passes from the 40 to take advantage of it. We need to have variation or else it becomes too easy to play against

Atleast our hurlers stopped it from being a terrible weekend. Been a terrific season for them with promotion to division 2 and an unbeaten championship run culminating with a Nicky Rackard trophy and promotion to Christy Ring, they done brilliantly to fight back in the second half after playing well below their standards in the first. Great to have another All Ireland trophy heading back to the hills!

Well when Monaghan reach 10 or 11 of the last 14 Ulster Finals I'll take note if their views. Won a couple of Ulsters as the poster points out and as usual…. Did nothing else of note

Maybe you could see yourself of to your own forum. All you do down there is play football. If we did the same wouldn't worry about youse one bit given we are a bigger, more populated county. Now scoot.
