I myself am going to try see if there is much appetite for getting hurling started again in the parish. I know indoor hurling has been going on in the club for a few years in the winter at u6, u8s. Mickey Dorrigan was the only real driver of it in the parish for years. In years previously Mohill, Eslin, Bornacoola hurlers would have played for us but would be hard to know would they lave Carrick and join back withus if we did start up again. This fourm is always worth a laugh. So we should start following the hurling because we are no good at football? And we will be one of the best 15 counties in hurling in a few years!! Honestly ya couldn't make it up. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 335 - 24/11/2023 12:03:54 2514440 Link 0 |
Theres 35 county teams in hurling so top half would be 17-18. Wouldn't be a million miles away from that if we focused on hurling. Obviously not going to happen. I think the talking point is why don't the county board put more money and effort into hurling when we have been more successful in it on a national stage than football in recent years.

The main reason is Leitrim people in general aren't very interested in hurling. A lot of us are very passionate about Leitrim football even without having had much success. It's our main sport, our only sport.

And unless it's at the very top level, hurling is a hard watch. Bunches of lads hacking at the ball on the ground. I'd genuinely watch junior c football than that.

Shame on you for a comment like that ,sligo were n the poor state years ago with only 3 r 4 clubs ,then 2 more joined in 2007 and 1 more in 2018 and 1 more last year ,there now a whisker away from winning christy ring ,and it's well achievable in Leitrim if the will is there to do so and not to be pumping endless amount into football and nothing to hurling and watch the football go no where

I wouldn't watch a Sligo Hurling match either. I'd rather watch the footballers go nowhere because its the game I played and its what I'm interested and the majority of Leitrim people are the same. But best of luck in the Christy Brown cup.

Most Junior teams in the bigger counties would beat Leitrim the county board would get better return on investment if spread investment to other codes.. honestly can't watch a hand ball match unless Kerry is playing the way football I'm going dingle82 (Down) - Posts: 231 - 25/11/2023 10:43:08 2514541 Link 0 |
Lads let's be honest hurling in the weaker counties is muck to watch and you would only have 50 people at a game if you were lucky. williesboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 419 - 25/11/2023 12:12:39 2514552 Link 2 |
Shocking disrespect there. And just because you're not a hurling fan.

True. I'd have no interest in watching Leitrim v Warwickshire like 99% of people from Leitrim. I'm shocked at the amount of hurling fans in the county by reading some of the posts on here. I'm amazed we only have two clubs. The money being spend on both the hurling and football teams is outrageous but we are a football county so I'd rather it was spend on football. Just my opinion.

You've no interest but what about your pride? Have you no pride in your county that you'd want to see Leitrim have no competitive hurling team because some hack in HQ has decided the gaels of Leitrim are not worthy of support? Some things aren't all about money and this is one of them.

Everything comes back to money, some of the hurlers wouldn't be at it unless they were getting getting well looked with travel expenses etc. That's a fact. If Leitrim as a county had pride in hurling there would be more than two clubs playing it. And we would be getting lads from other counties to play for us. I'm just giving my honest opinion I'm not looking to change anyone's mind. The proposal will be withdrawn or defeated anyway, but the problem with the cost of running a hurling team that there is very little interest will be kicked down the line and it will affect funds being used to develop a proper underage structure to produce future county footballers. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 335 - 26/11/2023 14:38:34 2514629 Link 1 |
As you well know, Hurling is a harder sport to play and get right. It needs more intensive coaching than football in my opinion. Any lad can kick a ball. Leitrim probably would have no hurling teams at all were it not for people like Paddy O'Connor (RIP) & Martin Cunniffe, both men from hurling strongholds, who moved to Leitrim and gave up their time to show others how to play. We are coming from a very low base like most counties around us and the lads who do play for the county have to be commended. I very much doubt they are getting massive expenses to play for Leitrim but at least they're keep it alive in the county... it certainly won't be if this proposal goes ahead. Sharing a GPO with Sligo surely won't develop the game in the long term and having a bit part county team surely won't inspire any young lad to play hurling. If this goes through, wait until you see, football will be next. Square_B (Leitrim) - Posts: 1025 - 26/11/2023 15:46:25 2514631 Link 0 |
Shocking insults towards Leitrim hurlers from people who probably never attend Leitrim hurling games. Skill levels have vastly improved and impressive development work in Carrick & Manorhamilton has created a conveyor belt of new young talent . It's unlikely Leitrim will increase club number due to population, dominance of football and competition from other sports particularly Rugby which is gaining a foothold at schools level.5 of the eligible County U20 squad have gone to the Connacht Academy . Leitrim Hurlers missed out on promotion to Cavan by 1 point and were one point off qualifying for the Lory Meagher Final. We should be proud of their commitment and talk about beer bellies is both ignorant and untrue. I predict our Hurlers will be competing for promotion & a Lory Meagher Final in 2024.

Can anyone tell me where you can buy the new Leitrim jersey? Is it only online through McKeever? Forgodssakeref (Leitrim) - Posts: 15 - 30/11/2023 12:08:59 2515070 Link 0 |

I cannot understand why the GAA headquarters don't release the definitive and precise dates and times of the national league fixtures much earlier. Releasing the proposed dates (that might change) is not good enough. Many Gaa supporters like myself live away from the county and do not have an inside track to get the fixture list. I like to follow the Rossies as much as I can, but I still do not know the OFFICIAL locations, dates and times for the league fixtures. No mention of the League fixtures on the Gaa website. (Thanks Analyser for giving some previous feedback which was helpful). People have other family events and interests in their lives and need to plan well in advance. Late booking normally cost more money and some towns do not have much accommodation to offer. Why do the Gaa leave it so late to inform their supporters? Do they really care? letsgetgoing (Roscommon) - Posts: 633 - 30/11/2023 15:03:26 2515105 Link 1 |
