A loss here and Davy will be gone."
Roscommon have been poor all season. If we win on Saturday, it'll only be because Cavan are even worse than us and it'll only extend the year by another game. Roscommon are going nowhere at the moment and we all know that. We had two chances at home against an ordinary enough Mayo team minus their best player and we couldn't take either. Very little cause for optimism and Davy who has brought Roscommon backwards this year needs to be gone next season.

That's usually the case. Beat a team and they tend to be worse than you. You might think Mayo are ordinary but are still be a top six team who beat Dublin this year and only lost to Kerry by a point scored deep into added time.

This has year has showed Roscommon didnt have the strength in depth to cover for the injuries and those starters that opted out. The worst thing Davy Burke did was not bringing in like for like replacements for McHugh, McGowan or maybe that was a county board decision and couldn't afford such replacements?

Your last 2 lines might be on the button.
Mind you McHugh departed late in the day when most coaches etc had arrangements made for the year.

Lee Keegan is becoming some predictable bore. Obviously his digs at Roscommon touch a nerve but the substance of his articles for RTE are desperately lacking any real substance or insight and could have been as easily churned out by an AI programme. Why don't they let Fitzmaurice do them.

Fitzmaurice is a fine analyst right enough.
Don't know if that will be the starting 15 or if the jersey numbers mean anything for a lot of them.
A defeat here could see the end of the road for a few lads. And manager too I'd imagine.

He likes to rile the neighbours, Galway get as uptight about it as ye do. You need to relax and not be as sensitive. Dublin continually throw jibes at Mayo . It's all a merry go round except no one can throw digs at Dublin.

I think if R Daly is fit I'd start him. Might be no harm for Niall to get a rest but wouldn't be surprised if he starts. I'd nearly prefer to see Enda as an impact sub in this one and let some of the others step up. Would love if Keith Doyle could move up to the next level. He's a good fielder and a great lad to get a score.

Keegan and Fitzmaurice are both intolerable bores imo, both with condescending outlooks on certain teams fortunes.

It's all a bit of craic in fairness. We love beating Mayo more than any other county but in reality Keegan is not far wrong. They usually do beat us in the Hyde which is shocking really. It's 2001 since we beat them there in the championship. I've no idea how many times we've beaten them since in Fbd or league games there. I'm sure that stat makes for grim reading too. Anyway it'll be interesting to see what Keegan has to say for himself and Mayo after Dublin beat them. I can see Dublin winning by 10. Mayo are not a shadow of the teams of old. Unfortunately that means we're not great presently either as we still can't beat them. It's been pointed out here before but until Ros get their mentality right we will.continue to ship beatings from Mayo, Dublin and Kerry. Hopefully next season we get in a proper defensive coach and that'll go a long way towards us getting back to Div 1.

Relax. If I got worked up about every jibe thrown at us down the years (Brolly, Spillane, Silke, Davis, Cake I think had a go too) I'd have to have myself checked in.

Are ye sticking out a few Mayo flags for the weekend? All I've seen is an odd Dublin one ;)

Hopefully all three Connacht teams get the win this weekend. It's always more fun when the neighbours are still involved.

Keegan gives Dublin to nod for the win. So not sure what he has to say. Don't think we lose by 10.

Ah they're only a few Western Gaels flags you will see on the way to The Hyde… ;-)

Don't like Mayo at all when we face them. But anyone from Ros cheering on Mayo isn't a real football fan. Wouldn't read much into it. Lads that wouldn't find their local club. No love lost but respect there somewhere between us and Mayo

Well this is it. A season that started out with some optimisem and went down hill all the way is nearly over. Remember we won the FBD and St. Bridgets almost won the club championship. Perhaps it was all too much. This team never got going at all and now it's just a matter of playing out the remaining game or maybe two. Surely we will give it a lash in Longford and look like a county with a bit of pride and backbone. Sadly I'm not so sure. The team picked looks like a lot of square pegs in round holes. Cavan have nothing to loose so I expect them to have a go. It's what they do no matter how bad things are going for them. Maybe we're up to it and maybe we're not. Let's start looking forward to the club championship and a few spicey local clashes to brighten our summer.

Roscommon v Cavan. A fixture that resonates with history. Roscommon's first ever Senior All Ireland football final in 1943 was against Cavan and was won by us after a replay. A replay notable for the sending off of Cavan's Joe Stafford, the first player ever sent off in an All Ireland final. Cavan dominated Ulster back then. They won 8 Ulster titles in the 1930s and they won an incredible 9 Ulster titles in the 1940s. How the Breffni men have fallen back. They've only won 2 Ulster titles since 1970. Today unfortunately is about which is the better of two poor teams, neither of which has any serious prospects in this year's championship regardless of what happens today. We'll likely never see again a Cavan v Roscommon All Ireland final . Indeed it's to be wondered if either of these counties, both rich in gaa tradition, will ever again reach and contest a senior All Ireland football final.

Woke up this morning full of hope and optimism.
Rossieforever and endgame have put an end to that.
Talk about negativity.......

Best of luck to the lads this evening.
Time to make a statement!

Best of luck to the team, panel members and management today. Hope we will give our best performance of the year. It been a tough year so far, but "when the going get tough, the tough get going". Time for the team to really up their game and really go for it.

One of the best ways to improve the fortunes of Roscommon football (and for the benefit of the county in general) is to have attractive employment in the county so that so many young people (and the vast majority of the county panel I'd wager) don't have to leave for work and opportunities. It's not unique to Roscommon but it is a chronic issue. Plenty of people leave Mayo but they also have big employers like Baxter, Allergen, Portwest. There has been a huge lack of ambition and foresight by politicians in Roscommon, with the exception of Denis Naughton, for a long time to improve the county and make it an attractive place for youngsters to come back to live after finishing college. It is unrealistic to think you will have massive amounts of companies setting up here but there definitely could be improvements. Roscommon town should be looking for campus opportunities from AIT. Make no mistake about it, if it was Mayo they would be fighting tooth and nail to get stuff. We might not get on with Mayo on the football field but as a county the people have a great confidence about themselves, always trying to promote the place and get things set up to improve the county whether that's Greenways for tourism, multi nationals for employment or the Castlebar campus for GMIT. We would do well to take a leaf out of their book.
