Replying To festinog:  "There is a tremendous irony that under the guidance of one of our greatest ever forwards, the team plays with such timidity."
Yes it seems when he first took over, PJ was all gung-ho with an "all out attack" policy / game-plan. Of course he learned on the job that defense matters also but it appears to me that a lot of the players are playing with fear of making a mistake and sometimes the opposition fans also intimidate them. Conor Gleeson appeared to be intimidated when he took the first 2 frees at the start of the game with all the booing etc. from the Armagh fans. That kind of thing should not happen or players should not be affected by it.

Yes it appears to me the only proper out and out "forwards" playing against Armagh were Walsh and Finnerty. The likes of Darcy, McDaid, Tierney and Maher are never going to bother the scoreboard too much. I know Comer is absent but surely the likes of Heaney, Culhane, O'Curraoin, O'Conghaile or Cunningham would have been more likely to at least get a point or two.

Forgot to mention Sweeney also and I know he can also play at halfback (a bit like Heaney).

Replying To tommy k:  "I think Galway are playing too conservatively for the players they have - all this back and forth, slow, lateral play is ok to a degree but sometimes they just have to go for the jugular including going for goals along with points. Of course when it breaks down like after the soft goal conceded in the Armagh game where there was "chaos" for the last 15 mins or so is where all this goes out the window and then it can be too late to claw it back. As you say, they have to show more ruthlessness and less of this "dilly-dallying" with the slow build up play scoring a nice point here and a point there which may end up with Galway being a point or two ahead at the end. That is just a fearful approach to important games which usually ends up in tears."
Agreed but it all stems from the speed that the ball gets past the halfway line. McHugh broke the line a few times with some great dummies and handling and Galway scored some brilliant points that way, quick hands and someone shooting accurately.
But when we kick it out slowly, the other team have everyone back, we hold onto it until there's a scoring chance. It's effective in fairness against a blanket defence but the blanket is there because we move the ball too slowly .
We turned the ball over a few times last Sunday and still baulked at a quick ball forward into space.
It won't win an All Ireland.

Highlights of Monaghan v Galway league match came up on phone hard Believe a player who scored 1-03 from 4 shots can't get into squad and players who have not scored 1-03 In 4 matches are playing,, if either Walsh or Finnerty get injured he probably play John Daly and eoghan Kelly in forwards they must be only 2 backs he not tried there yet ,,, for such a brilliant smart player Joyce making most baffling positional decisions I've ever come across,,

Was brilliant when he came on in the Connacht final (first game back).

Scored in all three of the group games.

Won't find a more natural finisher from play or placed balls around the county. Role he's asked to play (like any player in the half forward line) none of them will rack up big scores. But he's playing well and chipping in when he gets a chance.

We (like most teams, and even at that a lot play 15 behind the ball) leave one inside forward. Currently Rob Finnerty. Comer and Culhane would be the others. O Curraoin seems to have fallen down the order.

The rest are expected to "basketball" it up and down the pitch. Good and all as some of these forwards are tackling and workrate not the strongest points. Anyone thinking you'll have 3 or 4 sharpshooter standing close to goal will be a long time waiting.

I have to disagree with you, Conor stays as the first choice keeper. Yes there were two mistakes but better now than in Croke Park. We have to back the keeper. If the lads hadn't missed 4 or 5 chances to put us 8 or 9 ahead there would have been no pressure on any kickout. Other players missed easy chances kicking them short or hand passing them of the upright but nobody is calling for them to be dropped. It is a time to stay calm.

I think ye have to back the keeper but make sure if in doubt kick it long. Ye have big fielders who should be able to win long ball. One of Mayos downfalls some years back was flip flopping between keepers.

True, they were some shocking misses that let Armagh stay alive in a game where they should have been dead, whoever plays them in the QF will have a great chance to win.

Goalie won't change if it didn't happen during league or championship when they were hammering London and didn't give sub goalie a run.Hopefully just blip as Connor Gleeson had really improved.Upwards and hopefully onwards.

Galway had so many poor attempts in the 2nd half which was in contrast to to the first half, Finnerty & Conroy missed 2 very chances trying to fist the ball over the bar both you'd expect to make with their eyes closed. Finnerty dropped 2 short, hit the bar and sent another one wide so really didn't have a great game whilst Sweeney appears to have a shot blocked down in every match which shows his decision making needs to improve, easy ball was to give it back to Finnerty who could have took his score or popped it too Walsh who was in on goal.

Armagh as big a team as Galway and won more long kickouts then we did but there was some very poor ones from Gleeson, kicking to the wrong side to an isolated Galway player far too often then losing 3 in a row which led to 1-2 from Armagh.

Galway were excellent in the tackle, only gave away one scoreable free and even then that wasn't a blatant one! They were great on the ball a and created more then enough chances to win that game comfortably. Scored 15 points and should have been 19 or 20. Its not as if Galway were kicking from huge distances in that second half, 6 of those chances that were missed were very straight forward and were well within the scoring zone.

Despite all the above it was a crazy 5 minutes where Galway couldn't get their hands on the ball because of poor kickouts which was their real downfall.

It was stated he scored 2-7 in the Connacht Final last year. Of course a number of them may have been frees / 45's and his scoring rate has definitely dropped off. Joyce said directly to him previously that he should be chipping in with 3 or 4 points from play in most matches and if he did that Galway would have topped the group last Sunday and not be faced with an uphill task from here on in.

Not sure why Tierney is up for discussion when he had one forward who scored 3 points from 7 attempts.

Tierneys doesn't miss too many chances when he gets them.

If you aren't knocking in 2-7 per game you simply aren't up to the lofty standards of some posters. Lol.

Team news released, no changes on the starting 15 from the Armagh game. Comer is on the bench this time around though.

Hard to imagine Mulkerrins starting after the back issue that saw him subbed last time out unless it was some sort of temporary spasm.
