Same trap as Daly last week. Throw a big lad in there just because he's big. Darcy hasn't the football to play in there. He's just very limited. Honest but limited. Conroy has shown in the past that he can be effective at 14. But we probably needed him in the middle of the field today so they didn't want to sacrifice him out there in the last 15 minutes. We really need a plan B for when Comer is missing - and you can be sure with his injury record there will be times we won't have him. Throwing random midfielders into 14 is not the answer. galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1278 - 04/02/2024 17:50:10 2524280 Link 0 |
Not really true about Mayo. Taking the team that lost to Dublin in championship last year missing Padraig O'Hora, Matthew Ruane, Diarmuid OConnor, James Carr and Enda Hession. Kevin McLoughlin and Jason Doherty have since retired.

Big improvement on last week (wouldn't be difficult) stronger in the tackle and faster onto the ball and won the midfield battle. Hate to bring the referee into it but there was a lot of soft frees out there. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1632 - 04/02/2024 18:02:26 2524286 Link 0 |
perhaps i am becoming used to bland football but being there today i did not think it was a bad game! listened to the match report on galway bay fm on the drive home and they said game was very poor. that said the so called experts did not have conroy even down as a nominee for man of the match which was comical cavan.galway (Galway) - Posts: 212 - 04/02/2024 18:12:57 2524290 Link 0 |
Yes but if you asked most Mayo fans they would probably say only DOC and Ruane would get into the starting fifteen from last week. That was the point really. O Hora isn't going to start ahead of any of those backs (don't get me wrong I hope he does as think he is a weak link). No point talking about the retired lads. Carr an impact sub this year at best I think. Hession the only other one that might get a start. But was pretty close to full strength galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1278 - 04/02/2024 18:22:11 2524293 Link 0 |
Yes two retired so guess what.. they won't be playing any more.. O Hora will not be a starter and neither will Ruane. Mayo are going full tilt and have their strongest team going... They are favourites for their main competition ( the league ) Galwaymaster9 (Galway) - Posts: 397 - 04/02/2024 18:39:13 2524300 Link 0 |
Whatever chance Galway have of staying up I think they definitely need to beat Tyrone next. Derry are flying it with a full strength side out every game while by the time Galway play Kerry and Dublin those sides will have their full teams out as well. You'd be doing to well get agreement from any group of Mayo supporters on a preferred starting 15 if everyone was fit and available, which is rarely the case for any intercounty team. That being said I think starting Paul Towey ahead or James Carr, Cillian O'Connor or Tommy Conroy would be niche view point.

None of Bob Toughy, Boland, Towey, or Brickiden have never being first team players for mayo in the past. Mayo aren't going full tilt we just have way more debt than Galway. 10 of the squad that bet Galway last year in the championship were not named yesterday.

Fair play to Mayo, they won a game that was going against them. The big conundrum is what to do with Aido. Def. take him off free taking duty!!. Use him as a target man/mark taker full stop.. Pj is going experimental and may try Dessie/Costelloe midfield next outing..

So bonkers it defies belief. UoG that reached the last 2 Fitzgibbon finals is stacked with Galway players. Footballers still relying on 2 forwards that are over 10 years playing for the county.

Boland has played plenty of championship, Tuohy ( spellcheck) is in his second year as is Brickenden and Paul Towie has has a few years in and out... 10 of the squad?? So what.. 3 retired.. 3 are injured.. The fact is.. Mayo have been back training hard since late October and fair play to them... Look, Mayo have most of their first team available and playing. The only real ones missing that might make a difference are Ruane and D O'Connor and Ruane was poor enough last year. That's pretty close to their best team no matter how it's sliced. Galway are down their best 5 players and a couple others on top. The two situations are not even really comparable. Why do the Mayos emerge into a thread where no one wants to hear from them.

We have a fair bit of debt ourselves from the Mountain South debacle.

Probably not said often enough but Paul Conroy has been some servant to Galway football. Will be seriously missed when he's gone. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2290 - 04/02/2024 22:28:16 2524399 Link 2 |
No other county would be called at "full strength" if they were trying at 5 relatively new players. Where does nonsense come out off they were not training since October. They were not back any later or earlier than Galway. Sssthe (Mayo) - Posts: 58 - 04/02/2024 22:31:11 2524401 Link 0 |
