Lavey got their Derry senior football championship campaign off to a flying start yesterday evening by defeating Drumsurn on a 4-19 to 1-17 scoreline in Owenbeg.

The first game of this year’s John McLaughlin Cup race saw goals making the difference for the Erins Own club after having fallen 0-4 to 0-1 behind in the early stages.

Hugh McGurk’s goal in the 13th minute saw Lavey hitting the front and more majors from Rory McGill and county man Niall Toner saw them in firm control by half-time when they led by 3-10 to 0-10.

McGill would raise his second green flag in the 53rd minute to all but cement the victory for Shay Murrin’s men, with Drumsurn battling to the last whistle as Tiarnan McHugh finished with a tally of 1-4 to his name in the Derry SFC’s opening fixture.

Action resumes in the competition on Saturday afternoon with the clash of Swatragh and The Loup in Owenbeg (1pm), while holders Newbridge commence their title defence against Dungiven on Sunday at the same venue (4.30pm).
