McGowan definitely isn't a center back, he plays midfield/forward for his club. 6 is still such a specialist position, look at John Small or Tadgh Morley both are natural defenders.

To play at center back you need to be able to defend, read the game, know when to man mark and when to let the guy you're picking up drift. Nowdays you also have to be able to cover the fullback line and get up the pitch.

Harnan ticks most of the boxes but doesn't have the engine to get up and down the pitch. When Meath were at there best in 2019 he was the center back.

Keoghan ticks all the boxes and would be my first choice center back but his ability going forward from wing or corner back make him a bigger threat

Jones can defend, he started off playing wing back for Dunboyne and he is able to get up and down the pitch. It's the other aspects of his game that are not there.

Hickey could be worth a punt, he has played there plenty for Seneschalstown, can defend, reads the game well has the engine, biggest issue would be his man marking ability.

Well I was only using McGowan as a sticking plaster. I don't think it would be much of an issue for this particular game. It could be a serious problem next week. In actual fact I think your suggestion of hickey is not a bad idea at all. Jones for me is wasted there.

Sure ya may aswell say the likes of Jordan Morris centre back if your throwing McGowan in there, terrible call.

Not as bad as jones. And I'm not the manager.

Have to disagree it would be worse than Jones. Jones is atleast extremely physical and his best attribute is probably his tackling. My hunch would be that Colm pick Campion at 6 at the weekend given that he played there against Galway and he comes back from corner forward to play a deep lying sweeper role for TUD. Don't think it'll go great but I think that's what he'll do

Morris injured is a worry, harnan was good last year when mcentee returned, but without him he seems a bit at lost. Defense will be our worry. I expect frayne to play. Moriarty could also feature. For me while no game is a given this is a must win. We need to head to newry with a bit of confidence."
What's got you heading to newry? Shopping trip or did I miss something and did Down get promoted to Division 2?

Team named this morning for those that didn't see it
1. Brennan
2. Keoghan
3. Oneill
4. Murphy
5. Caufield
6. Campion
7. Coffey
8. Jones
9. Flynn
10. McGowan
11. Walsh
12. Hickey
13. Lynch
14. Costello
15. Jack O'Connor

Strange to see campion at 6. And wouldn't argue with many on that team personally wouldn't have the 2 trim boys starting myself . Would like to see if this team lines out as follows in terms of positions( I understand changes to personnel , late injuries , failed fitness test on the day ) . If we are throwing out dummy teams for playing the likes of Fermanagh I really don't get it . Should be winning this comfortably

If you told me last year that Caulfield would be the only one to start for the seniors from last year's u20s I'd have called you insane. How Moriarty, Frayne and Kinsella are all on the bench is mind blowing. Billy Hogan the best keeper in meath not even on the panel. Campion has played for TUD at 6 and done very well so I do think that's a good decision given the circumstances.

Hickey and O Connor swap from there starting positions with Walsh and Costello interchanging throughout the game. I am a bit surpriesed that one of either Frayne or Kinsella aren't starting, both on red hot form with colleges and have done well in O Byrne Cup and club championship. Personally I'd start them both ahead of Hickey and possibly Walsh as well who for me hasn't lived up to the hype. Interesting to see if there are any changes made, very light defensively on the bench but that ahs been well highlighted by now so its not much of a surprise

Some patience is required here lad particularly with Frayne and Kinsella because they are only new in from the 20s. Frayne played a small amount of minutes in the TC cup last year but Div 2 a different ball game even Fermanagh.

Definitely agree with easing them in.

Moriarty did well at midfield in OB cup but is nowhere near an Inter county midfielder at DIV 2 level so if that is the position they seem him playing it's not a surprise he isn't starting.

That being said Walsh played a full college game on Wednesday and with his injury troubles lately I wouldn't be surprised to see him come out of that team and one of the other lads come in.

The bench:

Hogan, Flood, Frayne, McDonnell, Kinsella, Moriarty, Conlon, Curtis, Dixon, O'Halloran, and Cian McBride.

I'd expect Frayne, Moriarty, Kinsella and McBride to get a run. It would be interesting to see how McBride does.

If Andy McEntee picked a team leaving scoring forwards like that on the bench people would be calling for his head.

Walsh was taken off after 38 mins Wednesday thankfully. But has played a lot and a bad injury history so you might be right

Yeah - think you have called it well! I'd say there will be plenty of early changes given the football some of the lads are playing with college etc. I'm with you on Walsh - and certainly don't see him as an out and out 11 but I do think he is a handful in the full forward line!

Whatever - it is a good team and I think they will have way to much for Fermanagh! let's start with a win and build from there!! 6-7 point win!!

I'm not saying moriarty has to play midfield, he should be in there ahead of lynch or McGowan. He's been on fire for UCD in sigerson. Lucky for COR it looks like fermanagh are in a bad place and no matter how bad we perform we should still win. Its the following week against Armagh that worries me with team selections like this.

Somewhat strange team. Campion is probably the best option at 6. Can't understand frayne not starting. Say changes will happen. Great to see banty back on panel.
