Looks good and my team would be very similar, my only question is where is Diarmuid Moriarty? He's been on fire for UCD in sigerson and was outstanding against Longford in the O'Byrne cup, looks like he's been locked in the gym for months as he's put on a lot of size. I'd be putting him in instead of McGowan or Kinsella.

We won't find out to much about this Meath team or certain players against Fermanagh, as they are another Tailteann Cup team. However, Armagh away the following weekend will tell us exactly where they are at and if a few players are up to that level. BigJoe14 (Meath) - Posts: 997 - 22/01/2024 22:09:44 2521644 Link 0 |
I'm feeling a bit more optimistic this year, it seems like the management team and coaches are doing the right things. I don't know who is injured for sure so hard to pick a team but most likely the team that played Galway recently. I know Moriarty and Finnegan played well against Longford but I don't know if it's enough to put them on the starting 15. Definitely should be on the bench though. Who would you pick in the starting 15 ahead of them? Both scoring more from play than a couple of more heraled players.

I'd agree with Moriarty but not so sure about Finnegan. He scored two from play I think against a poor Longford team, albeit with a second string Meath side and it can be easier to play when surrounded by better players. I'd have Kinsella and Frayne in ahead of Finnegan and I'd almost start both of them ahead of some of the more stablished lads like you are saying, but I would imagine we will see a very similar team to last years with only injuries supplying the new personnel in the starting line up

Yeah that's the real test. Fermanagh are worse than either clare or limerick. It's not as a competitive division 2 as last year and anyone that tells you that it is hasn't a notion. Now I'd rate Fermanagh on same level as Offaly and we all know what happened there. But by Jesus if we can't beat them easily at home we may write off another year. Tbh I'm hopeful that management have learned from their folly last year and play something resembling a modern game, we still have the question marks over free takers and perhaps even midfield. The gk situation seems to have been resolved but the big worry is our backs, who I just don't know what they will be like against a team with decent forwards. We will have enough to comfortably beat Fermanagh by 5 or more probably. Armagh with Campbell etc could do untold damage to our backs and we won't be able to break them down as easy as this game. So please god we are not going to see the stupidity and naivety of going man to man that cost us so dearly v Dublin and Derry last year. So yes that's a worry and a real test This game should be about building confidence against a poor TC team. And then head to Armagh and take them. All of a sudden people think Ronan Jones is a good 6, Why ? just because he played there against Louth. And he dint have a great night that night. lost far tow many balls in an area where you don't give away the ball or take on multiple players. Id be very surprised if he start there the weekend. It will also depend on how lads go with the College ahead of the game.

I'd much prefer Harnan but he's not ready to play from what O'Rourke has said, I'd also like Keoghan there but the full back line options are so bad I think he needs to be back there. Who would you play there?

Agree! I never understood that call! No.6 is a very important position and if you don't know what you are doing it can cost a team. Bombing forward all the time and leaving holes in the middle is a recipe for disaster. Its bad we dont have an out and out 6. We are just robbing peter to pay paul! I thought Jones would be better suited to MF to add a bit of bulk and experience! i would also play Keoghan in one of the central roles. 3 or 6. probably more suited there at this stage of his career - and can lead better from a central position. We should get away with it this weekend but defense worries me! JonnieG (Meath) - Posts: 246 - 23/01/2024 19:15:31 2521784 Link 1 |
Didn't he defend the ball with his head last year?

So your 3 options for centre half back are Shane McEntee, James McEntee or Daithi McGowan for next Saturday first round of league?? I think it would be an understatement to say I am a little puzzled by you thought process here! winatallcost (Meath) - Posts: 587 - 23/01/2024 22:45:12 2521812 Link 9 |
Shane mc not on panel, James is but has only returned.

I'm not its that people think he is a good 6, more that people think thats where he will be played by O Rourke for the game (that was my reason for naming him there anyway) We are quite light in that position as well as the Full back line, we have a number of decent wing backs but none really capable of moving into the 6 role. I've seen someone mention McGowan as 6, if its Daithi they are referring to that is simply a crazy selection, and if its his brother Gavin (who plays there for Ratoath) he's not on the panel.

He should have tried to keep Ben Wyer in for corner back He has always been one of the best in the county Awaywin (Meath) - Posts: 116 - 24/01/2024 08:36:12 2521827 Link 0 |
Any word on Cian McBride? Is he far off a starting berth? GoalsWinGames (Meath) - Posts: 305 - 24/01/2024 10:55:54 2521863 Link 0 |
I believe he played an A v B game last weekend. But he was in Australia for part of January and given how little football he's played since 2019 and didn't play any pre season for Meath in my opinion he's behind Flynn, Gray, McGowan, Jones and maybe now Hickey as a midfield option. And then there's Danny Dixon who did quite well against Longford in the OBC

I think he's gone travelling, maybe COR might have tried that had he not chose to travel.

Fair enough thanks. I'd go with McGowan then. Jones better in midfield. He was really awkward at 6 v louth
