Replying To Crinigan:  "I think he was voted by the players to be captain, from what I understand..

Re his performances for Meath, I actually think he's a bit underrated and has improved over the years. I think he's the kind of player Boylan would have picked, he always had a couple of players on a team who you wouldn't pick out in a club game as inter county. He's ferociously hard working and committed every time he plays and that's all I want from a Meath player."
i don't want to get into a slagging match about someone who devotes so much of his time to club and county, but he was selected my management to be the Meath Captain, not by player vote.

Ridiculous decision to have the managers son being team captain. Just wrong in so many ways.

marrying into the club.. thats a new one on me. Unless you have married into a club miles away from your own club I have never heard that being used as an excuse before.

Regardless of the transfer budgets of the "big" clubs its great for football to see a genuine rural club achieve what Tones have done, every road in the parish is awash with colour, I was in Dunboyne last Thursday and i have seen more colour at one house in Kilberry than there. Its the parish thing, proud of your roots and a sense of belonging

Some waffle. Plenty of colour around Dunboyne. If you drove in and around all the hosing estates you'd have seen it. And transfer budgets.... Lol your away with the birds lad if you think Dunboyne Ratoath or any of them are paying lads to play for them.

Regardless of you being called out on your transfer jibe and having no answer to the response you mean.

The rest of your post is rubbish as well.

Congrats to Tones anyway, better team on the day and they won this champ the hard way.

From personal experience I can vouch for the fact that Tones aren't very gracious in defeat.
Posts like this suggest they don't handle the winning very well either.

Give it a rest I have never experienced that from them, they have always been very gracious to us. I only see one person on here and who says he's a tones man. It's you South Meath lads that can't handle winning or losing. Congratulations to the Tones, worthy champions, the only game they didn't win was against Kells. Great to see a small rural club in North Meath senior champions

Pretty sure theres been nobody on here from Dunboyne making any kind of excuses at all for Sunday. All have said the better team won on the day and Tones fully deserved their win not just sunday but the whole way through the championship with the teams they have beaten.

It's that big north meath chip on shoulder that clouds your judgement . People from South Meath just see Meath people and don't care where in Meath they are from.

People in North Meath are absolutely obsessed with how many north meath players are on the meath panels and how many north meath clubs won championships this year or made it to finals.

I personally just see Wolf Tones as a great Meath club who 100% earned their Keegan cup victory this year.

I call bull**** on this North Meath narrative. I'm from North Meath and as far as I'm concerned they're 15 men or women in Meath jersies, couldn't care less where they are from. The whole narrative has people at it from all over and its a bore. And don't act like people from South meath aren't at it as well, they can be as bad and worse when they went.

At the end of the day, Congrats to Tones, won a great championship. beat Kells, Ratoath and Dunboyne. That's as tough as it gets. Plenty of Dunboyne folk have been very gracious in how they've handled the defeat and hats off to them. Haven't seen anyone make any excuses from the Dunboyne club and fair play to them. Lets leave it at that and move on.

Anyone else talking pot shots at Dunboyne needs a proper look in the mirror and it says more about them than anyone else. Same as those who continue taking shots at Kells need a kick in the ****.

I didn't mention Dunboyne in my post I was replying to the post about Tones being sore losers and bad winners. In fact All Dunboyne posts on here are very compilatory to the Tones, and indeed gracious losers. But over the years there's nothing on here but people kicking North Meath and Kells in particular every chance they get.

Be a better person and raise above it then...

If all those people you perceive as kicking North Meath and Kells in particular jumped of a cliff would you??

Cop yourself on

Hi Brian,

What the story is with the big divide between North and South Meath.???
Seems to be a huge split there though in terms of attitude towards each other etc.

I am a Northsider and there would be a lot of slagging v Southsiders but not with the type of ferocity and sometimes venom that seems to be around the North v South Meath clubs...
Even the pick for your county team - and the attitude towards it some of the time, seems pretty heated...

And the Kells lads seem to come in for a lot of stick, which seems ott at times...

Someone on HS recently likened them to the Kildalkey hurlers - ???

I'm really not sure where it stems from Fionn? I'm from Kells myself but not connected with the town club and there's a perceived bias that the Kells team are soft and haven't done it when it counts most. TBH they haven't and opposing clubs will say it like it is and Kells supporters don't like that. Some north meath lads get very bum hurt by this and despite the fact they're always there or there abouts they feel they should have more members on the county panel. I would disagree with this. Some of their better players Seamus Mattimoe, Barry Tormey, Liam Ferguson have been in and around the panel but never made the break through. Until Fionn Reilly made a breakthrough this year the Kells people feel under represented and they should've had more county players. Jordan Muldoon is also on the panel and that would be a fair representation in my eyes as the majority of their best players are 35+ or have been on the panel and left or been disregarded.

There's also a notion that North meath men are tougher, again a bit of a fallacy. Lyons and Harnan are the hardiest of lads you'd meet and were from the south west of the county. The fact the south meath clubs are close to the Dublin border has always been a running joke that they'd be soft city boys.. but some people love to take it a bit too far. Some lads from south Meth love sticking it to the North meath boys and vice versa. It goes too far and some people take it too heart.

The fact that South and east Meath clubs are doing better in senior championship Ratoath and Dunboyne in particular and we've seen a resultant shift in the county panel to players from there doesn't sit well with some from the north of the county. The simple fact is that the better players are from those clubs and when you say it to the most vocal of North Meath backers who are the players that should be there or haven't had a chance they can't say a name and ignore the point... If you look at Dublin historically the squad was mainly north siders (Ballymun, Vincents, Na Fianna, Erins isle etc) but as the sport has developed on the south side and Ballyboden, Kilmacud, Cuala have gotten stronger and taken more spots on the county panel you understand the shift. The same has happened in Meath.

Most will have a laugh and a joke but some people will always be entrenched. If you look at the incident when Dublin won the five in a row and Ashbourne Credit Union congratulated Dean Rock and tweeted about it's coming home that rubbed many the wrong way in particular north meath folk, as it quasi proved their opinion about things... Bryan Menton wasn't slow in coming out and stating his displeasure at it saying Ashbourne is in Meath and as joint captain of the county it disgusted him the same credit union didn't show support for Meath mens and ladies football as Marie O'Shaughnessy from D/A was also ladies captain at the time. Many in the Dublin border area's are some of the best Meath supporters I've come across, they're always the crowds making noise at matches and fair play to them. Thats not to say fans from other towns etc don't do it, but most accents i hear have a dublin twang to them.

End of the day, i don't care where or what club the 15 players in a meath Jersey are from, they represent my county and i only want the best for them.

Very accurate post, I think your point about the power base shifting south side in Dublin is a very good one, with Crokes now the most successful team over the last 20 years and all 4 semi finalists in Dublin this year being south of the Liffey while Plunkett's and Vincent's got relegated. I think a lot of the North Meath resentment comes from something similar happening in Meath. If you look at senior 20 years ago it had clubs like Cortown, Ballinlough, Syddan, Oldcastle, Kilmainhamwood. And now with population influx Ratoath, Ashbourne, St Colmcilles have replaced them and I think there's a resentment of this and that's why most of North Meath seems to row in behind Tones and Kells the last few years. But like you correctly said when it comes to Meath teams who cares. All we need to do is look at our successful minor teams lately. The 2018 minors had no starters from Dunboyne, Ratoath or Ashbourne and only 1 from St Colmcilles and won Leinster and lost a semi final to Galway. On the 2021 minors there were 7 starters from those 4 clubs including the 3,6,8,9 and 14. And they won the all Ireland, so it doesn't really matter as long as it's the best players. What I can't stand are the description of those south east border clubs as soft, and claims that north Meath footballers are overlooked because there's a clique of south Meath people keeping it to themselves which some people on here come out with it and it's just simply not true

Cheers LR, good to hear your opinion on things. You always present a balanced and thought out opinion and I enjoy reading what you have to say. You always know an LR post will be a good post.

Yeah I agree with your point of the likes of Cortown, Ballinlough dropping down the grades replaced by Dunboyne Ratoath etc is rubbing some up the wrong way. But those clubs are being helped by an influx and growing population in their football clubs where as the north Meath clubs are more rural. Strangely I'd never count Syddan as a north meath club but you're right there. My own ignorance in not knowing they're close to Ardee (did a goggle maps)

I think if you look at Meath the older/ traditional clubs like Skryne, Senchelstown, Walterstown, O'Mahony's to a lesser extent have fallen back due a lack of population and a strong group of players together at the same time where as clubs like Ratoath, Dunboyne, St Colmcilles, Donaghmore/ Ashbourne and probably Simonstown have flourished due to huge growth at population, people investing time at underage, dominating the age grade football and that flowing through into the senior set up. I think the recent division 2 minor league final was between kells and navan which is strange considering the population those clubs should have to pick from at underage. Maybe they need to get their underage/ academies in order before blaming a perceived South Meath bias.

Another interesting point is that old schools system of winning Leinster titles in Trim, Kells and St Pat's Navan has all dried up. I remember in my time late 90's that those schools were almost always challenging for Leinster league and championship titles. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I think (and I may be wrong) it's Dunshaughlin, Ashbourne and Dunboyne that are competing at schools level now, whereas they used to be cannon fodder for the others ...
