Meath V Dublin

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After Conlon having a stormer I think he will get hard to get into the game if he does start because Dublin will just play a sweeper in front of him or Newman which will stop supply to him. And trying to play ball over the sweeper won't be ideal for him.

Also Kildare got a good few scores from distance, something that we haven't done so far this year but I imagine this will have to be part of our strategy.

I trust Andy McEntee and Nally will be well prepared with tactics and team selection. Can see 2 if not 3 changes to the team.

Really need to have a good kick out strategy. We were ok v Laois but not great previously.Dublin really put the squeeze on kick outs-hope its sorted

I think the best option would be to go long into Newman and Dardis, both are big strong lads and very good in the air.
They will eat us alive if we run at them and I don't think Conlon will get the same space as the last day.
Without O Carroll, Dublins fullback line is suspect under high ball. McMahon and Cooper are great man markers and love a good battle but high hanging ball is their weakest area.

Another option is stick Flanagan on the edge of the square if we are a couple of points down with 10 minutes to go then have Dardis and Newman on either side. I think Dublin would have to drop Fenton or Howard back in that case and play an sweeper.

You need more options for the 23 June, first things first!

Replying To waynoI:  "There is a long and short answer to this.

The short answer - No.

The long answer - Look, nobody can deny Meath are making massive strides. They have had a really good year and theyre going places. Their league campaign has been very good, But that was against teams like Clare, Fermanagh, Kildare, Cork, Armagh.. and in the championship you've beaten Offaly, Carlow and Laois. That's not taking away from Meath, Its more making the point that none of them are Dublin, In Croke Park. Its a different ball game.

Will Meath fear Dublin ? No. Will Meath relish the chance of playing Dublin ? Of course they will. Will they put in some hard hits ? Absolutely. But I just don't see a world where its enough to beat Dublin because Dublin dont hold any fear of Meath either. There is no psychological issues there, no inferiority complex. Theyre better in every single department.. Theyre just such a well oiled professional machine. They wont be having sleepless nights in the build up. They will just rock up, and take it from there. No complacency, no eyes on games ahead, they'll focus solely on Meath.

For me, Meath will still be way out of their depth. The gulf in class in Leinster is still astronomical and even if Meath do get that extra 30% improvement that RD is talking about, The eventual outcome still wont be in any doubt. That Meath team playing at 60/70% against Laois was good enough to win by 11 pts. The difference in Meath playing at 60/70% v Dublin, and playing at 100% v Dublin is the difference between a 7-9 point defeat (at 100%), and a 17-19 pt defeat (at 60/70%)

Dublin are 1/50 with the bookies and the handicap is -12."
Meath have a chance slim, but we have a chance make to mistake about that. We are waiting for yous. tick tock....

Niall kane is back training and could be on the panel in thw next game or two. But might not see game time til next year. Its a pity in our best performance under McEntee i, in Ballybofey Kane and McEntee were outstanding as attacking wing backs. We need a big game from J McEntee. When he plays well Meath play well. Shane Walsh finishs his leaving next week hes coming straight onto the panel. He was training with Meath senior panel last year. Ruari O Coilean was injured and he is also back training. A Ruari O Coilean Michael Newman James Conlon full forward line could be good. But I doubt Coilean will get game time this year.

Donal lenihan sud be back year after a year travelling. People r saying Ronan Jones wouldnt be back on the forum . I thought his course was a two year course. I havent heard anything. But the lads on the forum seem very certain he wouldn't come back next year . Which is not good news.

But we should have Donal lenihan Niall kane Ruari O Coilean Alan Forde Eamon Wallace Joey Wallace and Paddy Kennelly all potential returnees next year. Shane Walsh and players like Matthew Costello Cian McBride and Aaron lynch could be called up next year also. Our panel depth will be even stronger next year

V Dublin a dreadful rainy day could be good for us. I know we are a team that suits dry conditions . But 1986 and 96 were awful days and it meant a low scoring game. We showed v kildare in the second half in dreadful conditions in the league how good we can play in bad weather. The conditions probaly wouldnt effect Dublin. But its noticeable in 2015 All Ireland final was awful day and kerry v Dublin was a tight low scoing affairs. Bad rainy days can lead to dogfights. It just a hunch but I think a very wet day cud help I could be wrong.

For Andy has to attact I wouldn't be surprised he will try to do what he did with Donegal. Blow Dublin out of the water in first 15 mins. Throw kitchen sink at Dublin in first 15 mins. He could have tried this v Donegal as a trial for a possible Meath Dublin leinster . Probably not. But I think what we did v Donegal that is best option v Dublin and cud be the plan. And just then after our game mangement needs to be better aftrwards.

Dublin do give up goal chances. We need to go for goal ms early on. Dubin will score a possible 20 plus points. So we need 3 goals. Add 10 or so points to 3 goals Meath are around 20 points no way Dublin r hammering us by 15 points if we reach 20 points. It will be a close contest then. We need to stop Dublin scoring goals. In Meaths 9 victories in leinster in last 30 years Dublin didnt score a goal in any game. Any time Dublin scored goal in Meath v Dublin match they won. Any time Meath kept Dublin goaless they won their 9 victories over Dublin. Only in 2 games did Meath stop scoring any goal and Dublin still.won that was in 2007 replay and 2016 match. But we need to keep Dublin goaless.

And we need 3 goals minimun. Dublin will give up goals we could get 3 or 4. U will get goal chances kildare got 3 great goal chances v Dublin. We will need to take our chances and try and get an early lead.

When McEntee was in charge of Ballyboden in All Ireland club final Ballyboden he tried tried to blow away opposition in first 20 mins. It worked. McEntee tried it in Donegal and it worked to an extent. And if u want to look for an example of team beaten an all great team recently. Galway dethroned Codys kilkenny in leinster hurling final a few years ago. This was when kilkenny were unbeatable. Galway under Anthony Cunningham blew Kilkenny in the first 15 or 20 mins something like Galway 2 - 5 to kilkenny 0 - 1..It worked Kilkenny were shellshocked. Cunningham did the same thing with Roscommon v Mayo this year. Roscommon tore into Mayo ftom start and scored 2 early goals it set the way to victory.

It might not work for us. But I think its the only way we can be competitive attack Dublin from the start. Throw the kitchen sink at them in firsr 15 mins go for early goals try and isolate Conlon but also maybe Bryan McMahon close to goals. Hes a Croke Player in 2015 he destroyed Westmeath defence with 2 early goals We need to isolate a two man forward line and they need to take their goal chances. And then we pace our selves better then we did v Donegal. Maybe McEntee will try and do what he did in 2012 All Ireland final danage limitation. But that is inviting them on to u. I think u have to imposs ur game on Dublin. Easier said then done. But we need a high press. But do need 3 goals if the conditions are good.

Yeah a long accurate ball to Newman might work, Rather than a high lobbing ball.did well winning 50/50 in the League. Also COS has had spells a FF but it never seem really work. He is better running form Deep. Dublin have adapted well though since Rory o'Carroll left with the high ball in by breaking the ball and getting defenders around to pick up breaking ball. Maybe play Keoghan as free man he is our best ball carrier and regular breaks the tackle, He will need to be supported though.

History shows that the most likely course of events is that Meath will set up for damage limitation with 15 behind the ball. Think back to minor match some years back. Bookies say 12 points which meath will do well to better

I think Meath will play 13 lads behind the ball and 2 men in full forward line.

if we meet Dublin head on they will destroy us. we can keep the score down if we play defensive and should keep within 10 points.

I don't have a problem witg bringing men back, its the lack of urgency and speed when we do turnover ball as demonstrated in Offaly match. You have got to go for it when you want something. In a measured way of course but no point in sitting back for 70 mins getting well beaten and not know what maybe we could have achieved

I've heard the message from management is to view this game as a free shot and to have a go and see where it takes us, andy isnt setting us up to keep the score down

I'm not having a go personally and there's a lot of people who think the same as yourself but I don't really see the point in trying to keep the score down. It's a bit strange to me, if you go out with a 'keep the score down' mentality then you've already quit mentally but you're still going to have a go physically.

Essentially it's half quitting, you're going to waste a ton of energy and risk losing players to injury and suspension in a game where you've already accepted defeat before the ball is thrown up.

For me it should be 1 of 2 things, either:

1. Go out fully believing you're going to win and play as such, then whatever happens, happens.

or

2. Accept defeat and save yourselves for the next day, don't go risking anybody, probably better to field a B team.

Now obviously I'd rather see option 1 for the record.

The backdoor was introduced in 2001 and it's been pretty much all downhill for Meath since then (Furlong- can you do a write up on the backdoor and its impact on meath/Dublin?)

We need to approach this game like it's last chance saloon. Bring the same intensity that we saw in 2018 against Tyrone, and in 2017 against Donegal. We have a better team now and can win this game if we go into it with the right frame of mind.

We all know that it will be option a, Andy and the players are taking to the field fully believing in their ability.
Actually I am embarrassed by some people views at this stage. And I would ask those people to stay at home and stay away from any county player until after the game.

Absolutely, why not have a bit of belief, I've always been a believer in aiming high, quitters never achieve anything.

The whole country, including probably a large portion of Meath supporters will write off our chances, so what have we got to lose? If anything that should be extra motivation to prove the naysayers wrong.

And you know what, if we are hammered, then I'll come on here, congratulate the Dubs on their victory and look forward to getting a go at them again, whenever that is. Positive persistence is very important.
