Meath club succeeds at ninth attempt

Dunsany's Eoin Harkin

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! The old adage could apply to Dunsany who, at the ninth time of asking, were crowned Meath junior football champions yesterday.

Managed by former county star Kevin Cahill, Dunsany ended a long losing streak going back to 1972 when edging out St Vincent’s by 1-5 to 0-7 at Páirc Tailteann to finally get their hands on the Peter McDermott Cup. With Storm Ashley making for very difficult conditions, a goal was also going to be crucial and it was the winners who got in the 11th minute through Cian O’Sullivan.

St Vincent’s, who came out on top when the sides met in the 2021 decider, took a slender 0-5 to 1-1 lead into the interval, but four unanswered points from Eoin Harkin – who accounted for all of Dunsany’s points – in the third quarter went a long way towards ending their final heartbreak.

It was also a special weekend for Meath Hill who claimed their first-ever Meath IFC title following a 0-16 to 0-14 extra-time victory over traditional giants Navan O'Mahonys.
