Cavan and Tipperary both secured promotion to Division 3 of the Allianz Football League tonight with respective wins on home turf.

Cavan had 20 points to spare over Waterford in the end at Kingspan Breffni, where Thomas Galligan’s goal helped them to lead comfortably by 1-10 to 0-4 at half-time.

Luke Fortune’s point in the 51st minute saw the Breffni men go on a run of 1-7 unanswered, which included a goal from substitute Caoimhin O'Reilly to cement all but the points.

Talisman Gearoid McKiernan hammered in a late goal off the back of good work from sub Ryan O'Neill to put a seal on the 3-21 to 0-10 victory, as Mickey Graham’s men now look forward to next weekend’s Division 4 final against Tipperary.

The Premier men got the job done in Thurles against a plucky London outfit with a 1-14 to 0-12 win to join Cavan in an immediate return back to the third tier.

David Power’s charges didn’t have it all their own way as the Exiles kept it tight for the opening quarter of an hour.

Tipp eventually got 0-5 to 0-1 before Mark Russell lashed into the London net on 21 minutes and from there, they’d go on to lead by 1-8 to 0-6 at the half.

London had goal chances in the second-half but couldn’t convert them and points at the other end from Sean O’Connor and captain Conor Sweeney put Tipp on the road to a fifth victory in the division.

The results mean that tomorrow's clash between Sligo and Leitrim at Markievicz Park (1pm) is effectively a dead rubber affair with promotion unachievable for either team.
