Aonghus Clarke has been named as Westmeath senior hurling captain for 2019.
The Castletown-Geoghegan clubman has been one of the Lake County’s most consistent performers in recent years.
New Westmeath manager Joe Quaid and his selectors named Clarke as the man to lead the side this year as they look to make amends for last year when beaten in the NHL 2A and Joe McDonagh Cup finals.
Clarke made his debut for Westmeath in 2012 and has become a mainstay of the side ever since, while he captained the side in 2015 during Michael Ryan’s reign. The 25 year old lifted the NHL 2A title that year, before they were beaten in a promotion/relegation play off by Laois.
Castlepollard’s Allan Devine and Lough Lene Gaels’ Derek McNicholas have been named as joint vice-captains.
Westmeath begin their National Hurling League campaign with a clash against London at TEG Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon.
