Boardsmill's Jimmy Pratt gets away fron Rathmolyon's David Farrell during the IHC fianl at Pairc Tailteann
The contenders are Derek Muldoon, Andy Byrne, David Gilkenson, Mark Lynch, Mickey Cole, Jimmy Pratt and Cathal Flattery.
Boardsmill returned to senior hurling ranks with a 1-16 to 1-13 final day win over Rathmolyon at Pairc Tailteann. In all twelve teams contested the new look championship. We take a look at what we think were the best players on view.
Kilskyre's Derek Muldoon has been the club's best performer over the past three year's. The North Meath outfit contested the JHC decider in 2010 and despite losing out to Wolfe Tones were promoted to the intermediate ranks this year. Kilskyre topped their group, defeated Blackhall Gaels in the quarter final and lost out to Rathmolyon in the semi. 'Rasher's' ability to win ball and get scores were one of the reasons for this. Winner of a Kehoe Cup medal earlier in the year the talented player emigrated midway through the season and was a big loss to Kilskyre's title ambitions.
Donaghmore Ashbourne were unlucky not to qualify for the quarter-finals of the championship finishing just a point behind Kildalkey in the group. Andy Byrne proved that he could mix it with the best and was a handful for any defender in this year's championship. Byrne was also part of the Meath U21 hurling squad this year.
Dunderry made it to the championship quarter finals only to lose to Kildalkey after a replay. For the past couple of seasons David Gilkenson has been the club's top scorer. Gilkenson was very accurate from frees and play and was one of the main reasons why the Division 2 HL title was won.
Rathmolyon were aiming to make a quick return to senior ranks. Despite losing to Boardsmill in the final 'The Village' can be happy with a successful year. Defender Mark Lynch was brilliant throughout the year. Former Railway Cup and Meath star Mickey Cole also enjoyed a great year. The stylish forward was the main reason for Rathmolyon's path to the decider and almost single handed won the day scoring an impressive 1-11.
Boardsmill made up for the disappointment of losing the 2010 final by beating Rathmolyon in this year's decider. Their defence was great right through the campaign but we go to their forwards for their two outstanding players.
Full forward Cathal Flattery got crucial scores along the way including a hat trick against Wolfe Tones in the group stages and three great points in the decider.
Our award goes to the corner forward Jimmy Pratt. The very talented Pratt proved to be a real scoring machine for 'The Mill'. His ability to carry ball was a constant problem for defences. Many of his goals proved vital including one against Dunderry in the group stages and a crucial three pointer against Rathmolyon in the final.
Tomorrow we pick our award for the Best Referee in a pressure situation.
