Ulster Intermediate Hurling Championship Na Magha (Derry) - v - Carryduff (Down)
Owenbeg, Derry 3.30pm Sunday 4 October 2015
The Irish News Hurling pundit didn't give Carryduff Seniors Hurlers much of a chance when they travelled to Owenbeg, Derry to contest their first round Ulster Intermediate Hurling Championship game. But the Down men had other ideas than "an away win being unlikely".
Na Magha, playing with a considerable breeze to their backs opened the first half with points from Declan Foley, a long range first minute converted free, and from Robert Heagarty (3rd). Ronan Beatty's 4th minute conversion settled Carryduff but Sean O'Callaghan and Donal Óg Rooney missed two further opportunities before Niall Rodgers picked up a fairly innocuous yellow card in the 8th minute of play. Some scrappy and frenetic defending by Carryduff provided further opportunities for Foley to convert in the 8th and 11th minutes before he pucked wide from play in the 12th minute.
Conor Beatty's 13th minute point was key to keeping Carryduff in touch. Diarmuid Shiels missed a chance for Na Magha before Alan Grant pointed for them fourteen minutes in. Carryduff responded with a converted free (Rooney, 15th) and a point from play from O'Callaghan (16th) and Lynch was unlucky to see his 17th minute effort drift wide of the post. Foley converted a 17th minute free as Carryduff full-back Conor Cassidy picked up a yellow card but the Carryduff defence settled well intot heir task and pressured Na Magha into pucking wide twice in the 20th and 21st minutes.
Carryduff missed two opportunities to level affairs as ronan Beatty (22nd) and Donal Óg Rooney (25th) pucked wide. However, as the half came closer to a close and Carryduff piled the pressure on NaMagha leaked two costly frees which Beatty was happy to convert to leave the sides level at the break 0-06 apiece.
Na Magha opened with a flourish in the first few minutes of the second half, Malachy McCarron pointing in the 31st minute. However, the breeze seemed to have an impact on the hitherto reliable Foley who drove a 32nd minute 65 metre free astray of the posts.
A sublime sideline puck 45 metres out from Conall Early in the 33rd minute was one of the highlights of the game as Carryduff blustered in their efforts to get a grip on the game. Rooney pucked two frees wide (34th and 35th) before Ronan Beatty slotted over six-and -a-half minutes into the second half.
From this point Carryduff grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and held it steadfastly for the next twenty-five minutes. Holding Na Magha to a single point from a converted Foley free (45th) and a late goal from a goal-mouth scramble, the Down men asserted their authority and began to win ball in every section of the field. Substitute McGlinchey (42nd) snatched a point with his first action on the ball and Ronan Beatty converted a 44th minute free before converting two further opportunities (49th and 51st) to give Carryduff a six point advantage. Gareth Lynch's 52nd minute point extended the lead further an NA Magha looked in trouble all over the field. Beatty's53rd minute goal effectively sealed the result but he added a converted free (54th) as Michael Conway (55th) and Lynch %6th) piled on the pressure for Carryduff. Beatty collected the Na Magha puck out and promptly slotted over the bar and Eóin Conway converted a late free (58th) to give Carryduff a fourteen point cushion before Na Magha scrambled a late goal in the dying minutes of the game.
After a very strong second half's hurling Carryduff made the long trek back to County Down with a very credible victory on a final scoreline of Na Magha 1-08 Carryduff 1-19.
In the Ulster IHC semi-final, Carryduff will meet Tyrone champions Carrickmore who overcame Armagh champions Keady in today's other quarter-final game.
