UUJ Sigerson reunion for 1986, '87 and '91 squads

September 23, 2011
The remarkable achievement in winning three Sigerson Cups in the space of five years will be celebrated by the University of Ulster Jordanstown on Saturday 15 October 2011 at 7pm in the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast when the 1986, '87 and '91 Sigerson squads and management gather for a nostalgic reunion. It will bring together a virtual who's who of Ulster football.

It is generally recognised that one of the main catalysts for the renaissance in Ulster senior football in the early '90s was the dominance of Ulster colleges in the Sigerson Cup. Winning captain in 1987, DJ Kane, states that: "Winning Sigerson cups gave Ulster players the self belief and character to realise our potential at senior level. The professionalism in the Jordanstown organisation 25 years ago is now considered the norm is most counties."

UUJ club president John Farrell says: "It's hard to believe that it's a quarter of a century since we first won Sigerson, and we just had to mark the occasion. The motto at Jordanstown is 'friends for life', and some lads won't have seen each other since they graduated. Most of these players went on to become household names and achieve senior honours with their county - DJ Kane, Gary Mason, Barry Breen, Dermot McNicholl and Enda Gormley to name but a few.

"Charlie Sweeney and Eamonn Coleman RIP managed the side in 1986 and 1987, while Val Kane was in charge in 1991. Eamonn not being there is a source of great sadness to us, but his memory lives on. It should be another great night with a chance to relive some fantastic memories and, in keeping with Jordanstown tradition, it will be informal with plenty of craic."

Many others players from those squads enjoyed long and successful careers with club and county, including: Ger Houlihan, Declan Canavan, Padraig O'Neill and Gareth O'Neill, Armagh; Stephen Conway, Seanie Meyler, Noel Donnelly and Aidan Morris, Tyrone; Paul Coyle, Mark Gallagher, Tommy Maguire and Brian Carty from Fermanagh; Donal Armstrong, Antrim; Cathal Glass and Barry Young, Derry; and Gerard Colgan, Down.

The Jordanstown Gaelic Alumni are therefore extending a special invitation to all players, wives, partners, management - and to anyone from the Jordanstown GAA family especially friends and supporters of the club at that time - who would like to attend the event.
