Portumna cruise to Connacht title
November 21, 2005
Portumna……2-22
Four Roads…..0-6
Portumna were crowned Connacht club hurling champions following this facile victory over Roscommon champions Four Roads at Athleague.
Portumna, who only won the Galway championship last weekend, were in a different league to their opponents and had victory all but wrapped at half-time when they led by 1-9 to 0-3. Minor star Joe Canning had another fine game, helping himself to 1-9, including 1-2 from play. His goal in the 18th minute opened the floodgates for the Galway champions.
Canning and Joe Mannion swapped early second half points before Portumna moved up another gear. Following a David Canning point, Niall Hayes raced through the Four Roads defence and drilled home an unstoppable shot in the 40th minute.
The rest of the match was mere shooting practice for Portumna who can surely expect a much tougher test in the All-Ireland semi-final next spring.
