Charlie Mitchell has been appointed as the Offaly senior hurling captain for 2026, succeeding Ciarán Burke in the role.
The honour has been bestowed on the young Kilcormac/Killoughey forward ahead of him receiving the Offaly Senior Hurler of the Year accolade for the second year in-a-row at the Tullamore Court Hotel tonight. Mitchell, who skippered the Faithful County to a Leinster U20HC title in 2023, is set to captain the seniors for the first time against Galway in next Sunday’s Walsh Cup semi-final after last Sunday’s Round 1 clash with Antrim fell victim to the freezing weather.
Johnny Kelly’s charges progressed after a coin toss fell in their favour.
Mitchell, however, will miss the start of the Offaly SHC later this year after two-match bans were proposed for him and club-mate Cillian Kiely for contributing to a melee at the end of Kilcormac/Killoughey’s Leinster club SHC quarter-final defeat to Ballyhale Shamrocks in November.
