Cork great Jimmy Barry-Murphy described Sunday as “a proud day” after watching St Finbarr’s defeat Nemo Rangers to clinch their 11th Cork Premier senior football championship title.

Barry-Murphy joined Barrs manager Brian Roche in his backroom team as a selector last year and the 1-14 to 1-13 victory over Nemo sees the club capturing its third Andy Scannell Cup in eight years.

Speaking to EchoLive.ie, the former Cork forward said they knew it would take a colossal effort to get over the line against the 23-time champions.

“It feels great, proud of the lads, delighted for the backroom team,” said Barry-Murphy who won 11 county titles between football and hurling with the Barrs as a player.

“They’ve done all the work really. Brian Roche, Martin Desmond, Ian Keeler, Tomás Manning, they've put in a huge amount of work, along with a lot of others who I can’t name.

“But a proud day for the Barrs and, you know, it could have gone either way out there today, there’s no point in saying otherwise.

“Nemo are a great club with great spirit, we knew it was going to take a massive effort to beat them, but we just about got home in the end.”

He added: “Today is a proud day, and I’m proud of the lads. I can’t believe it. I was just overcome completely with emotion when the game was over, great to have my grandchildren here today, it’s just fantastic. I never thought I’d see that day again.”
