Paul McConway has been appointed as the new Tullamore senior football manager.
The stalwart defender and former county star’s appointment comes as no surprise after he had been strongly linked with the position following Niall Stack’s decision to step down just before Christmas. McConway’s appointment was ratified at a committee meeting last Thursday night and sees him call time on his playing career – at senior level at least – after he collected his fifth SFC medal last year.
“A winner of Offaly SFC medals in 2007, ‘13 (as captain) ‘21, ‘23 and ‘24, as well as an intermediate title in 2004, Paul is the club’s most decorated footballer since the 1930s and his appointment as senior manager now signals the end of his playing career,” Tullamore GAA said in a statement.
“A former Offaly captain, he represented the county with distinction from 2006-19. We wish Paul all the best in his new role. His management team will be finalised in due course.”
The Clara-based schoolteacher has big boots to fill after his predecessor and former team-mate Niall Stack enjoyed a hugely successful five-year tenure which yield three Dowling Cups. They also put eventual All-Ireland champions Cuala to the pin of their collar in their recent Leinster club SFC semi-final at Parnell Park.
